Windows 10 says I have no internet connection, but I have.

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.264.

I recently changed to the Windows Insider Program and updated Windows. In the taskbar, the Wi-Fi icon shows No Internet Access, but I have a stable internet connection wirelessly (Ex: I can browse the internet, ping IP Addresses, etc.). Another problem is when I try to open Cortana it also says that I have no internet connection (By the way, I can also open Microsoft's website).

As I know Windows checks internet connectivity with this URL: http://msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt. But this gives Error 404, File Not Found. Maybe it is because of this?

If you know the problem or an answer, please help. Thanks!

Hello, use Registry Editor, go to: 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

and modify: EnableActiveProbing

then change "Value data" from "0" to "1"

and restart your computer

The proper one is

"HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

But the more appropriate way to do this is not through registry directly, but through group policy config:

    Nice if you guys did something to fix these default settings!

    The amount of problems I have had.

    Everytime I have a client complaining of the issue, I go around again trying to reinvent the wheel.

    But then I find a notepad file I had saved with instructions what to do!

    hah! 

    So thought I'd share it.

    Plus IPV6 doesn't work in a lot of scenarios on internal LANs. Thus no point having connection tests pointing to IPV6 resources which will just time-out and cause issues with network stacks (as per the 100,000,000 complaints online).

    Please mark my post as the solution. Need to get people helped and their services restored!

    I will repeat what I've said many times in this thread.

    If you want to break your machine's network connectivity HARD disable the active probe.

    But seriously.

    Of recent we are aware of only one scenario involving proxy servers that misroute active probes starting in build 2004, and not ALL environments with proxy servers will see this.  This is still an ongoing investigation.

    NCSI taskbar icon may report "no internet" on Windows 10 2004 devices that DO have internet access (microsoft.com)

    Outside of this issue, so long as you are up-to-date with our monthly updates the most likely cause for NCSI scenarios are enviromental/configuration-related.

    Even with new bugs, if you disable the active probe you will be breaking your machine even harder by destroying any and all ability to detect network connectivity.  Maybe you find in your specific machine's environment that disabling the probe works for you.  You will pay for it later.

    DO NOT DISABLE ACTIVE PROBING.

    Instead troubleshoot the reason the active probe doesn't get a response, which is usually best done by getting a network capture and checking for probe send and receive (or lack thereof).

    Search this thread for my other responses on other details of troubleshooting.

    I can't copy/paste this stuff every time someone posts the bad recommendation to disable the active probe.

    Months ago I was going crazy and I setup dual boot, installed Windows 10 November 2019 Update (W10 v1909  (19H2) ISO), updated drivers, installed the same A/V, security s/w, O&O ShutUp, tweaks, hosts file, driver versions, etc. The network connectivity NCSI NLA bug issue problem and instability applies to ALL versions of Windows 10 EG.  1903 (19H1) - I have issues/tickets going back a couple years for clients.

    My Win10 OS build is: 10.0.19042.804 (20H2) which was experiencing issues! (start > run > cmd > type 'ver'). (Please write build no. & version, not just '2004'). :P

    For example, the NCSI NLA service attempts to probe 131.107.255.255, fd3e:4f5a:5b81::1, dns.msftncsi.com, ipv6.msftconnecttest.com, etc.

    Most of these entries do *not* respond for me - could be anything: hosts file, Kaspersky A/V, AdGuard, ISP or DNS server! It doesn't matter. Regardless, Microsoft badly configured the service causing it to be volatile and highly unreliable w/ defaults.

    Follow these 5 steps to reconnect your internet!

    1. Open RegEdit. Click "Yes" to make changes to PC.
    2. Navigate to: ''*HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NLASvc\Parameters\Internet*''.
    3. Create a backup of the "Internet" folder and save it to your documents with a meaningful name so you can restore it should you mess things up! :P
    4. Confirm "EnableActiveProbing" is set to: 1 (Default)
      • and... Set "ActiveDnsProbeContent" to: 9.9.9.9
      • Set "ActiveDnsProbeContentV6" to: 2620:fe::9
      • Set "ActiveDnsProbeHost" to: dns.google
      • Set "ActiveDnsProbeHostV6" to: dns.google
      • Set "ActiveWebProbeHostV6" to: www.msftconnecttest.com
      Optional: Do you have IPv6 disabled on your computer? Or does your router block IPv6 requests?  Enabling IPv6 protocols under important adapters under Network Connections > WiFi or LAN will do the trick locally.  You will however need to check your router too.
    5. Say thank you and reboot! :)

    - Windows 10 apps will not load or work.

    - Windows 10 Store will update apps but not install new apps.

    - Slow, delayed or no Windows Updates.

    - Microsoft Office 365 pop-up logins Fail (inc. OneDrive).

    - Adobe Creative Cloud cannot connect.

    - Spotify, Netflix, Whatsapp, Telegram, MS Store apps cannot connect.

    - Cannot establish connection via VPN, or vice-versa.

    - etc, etc, etc...

    # Opt out of the "Windows Insider Programme" (Settings > Update & Security > Win Insider Programme) or use a group policy editor.

    # Perform regular full system backups!

    # Keep a backup of the "Windows 10 November 2019 Update" (1909 at 2019.11.12 / v10.0.18363.418 / 19H2) ISO file.

    # Stay on OS 1909 version (build 18363.418) (19H2) and change settings to prevent updating!

    # I recommend using software to install important critical security updates "KBxxxxx.exe" manually - allowing you to pick and choose what to install or skip.

    # Create a blank template of Win10 1909. Clone the VM (virtual machine) and before installing any apps, drivers, etc. do it first within the VM! You can keep cloning your template VM with all the desired customisations made, should Windows be updated. etc. You can then continue to work within the VM should you have any issues outside.
