Windows crashing after clicking PERFORMANCE tab under Task Manager

Hello Windows Community folks

Windows 10 keeps crashing after I click Performance TAB in Task Manager. It crashes the windows going into the infamous Green screen with reason- Windows preview build failed. I have tried several debug options like cmd SFC Scan, DISM.

I have not specifically touched registry keys as I am afraid I will end up breaking something else.

What options do I have? Please suggest.

this helped for me,

I changed

NVIDIA System Control > 3D Settings > Global Settings > Preferred GPU

from "NVIDIA high performance processor"

back to "auto select"

    I think that is more of a workaround than a fix. The fix is to install the latest NVIDIA driver. After I did that, no more BSOD and I can continue to use the NVIDIA card as the preferred graphics processor.

    I had a similar issue for my laptop after a windows update, my task manager used to crash when I take the performance tab. I just got it fixed right now. May be this step will be helpful. 

    Below are the steps i did

    1. I took the NVIDIA control panel
    2. I selected Manage 3d settings from the right panel.

    See the below diagram for your reference. In the  Programm settings (Left side), I selected task manager and the preferred graphics processor as NVIDIA. For me Integrated graphics was selected as default. After applying this change, now I am not facing any issues

    Maybe this will help somebody, in my case it was the nvidia driver / chip on my lenovo w520 laptop ... this laptop has a dual graphic chipset (intel graphics 3000 / nvidia quadro 1000m) so in the nvidia control panel i set the taskman program to use the integrated graphic processor (intel)  and the problem went away ...  i have a couple of programs that need this ... i tried several versions of the driver including the latest 377.55 ... generally though i think it is an incompatibility of some drivers with the latest win 10 updates (i'm using 20h2) ...

    I have that very problem on my Dell Precision M4600. Whenever I have the Task Manager open, everytime I click on the Performances tab the app freezes for a couple of seconds and then it shuts down. My laptop has still the original factory configuration of the hardware, but it is fully updated to Windows 10 20H2. I run regularly Dell SupportAssist to keep the firmware and the drivers updated to the latest ones approved by Dell for the M4600. This issue with the Task Manager is so annoying!
