Windows 10 2004 optimization/defrag bug

Hi all

I've just completed the Windows 10 2004 upgrade and I have noticed 2 issues.

  1. When I manually trim my SSD in the drive defrag/optimize tool in windows and I reboot it says 'never optimized' when i go back. I heard this was a bug in insider preview which they obviously didn't fix. 
  2. I happened to have the defrag/optimize tool open at the same time as Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance, I initiated a manual maintenance and I caught windows defragging my SSD and then it trimmed it straight afterwards. If i click the optimize button in defrag/optimize tool it only trims it and not defrag.

This seem to only happen when Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance initiates its automatic maintenance or if I select start maintenance.

This is concerning as it should never attempt to defrag an SSD.

My laptop is only a few months old and came with a PCIe SSD and Windows 10 1909 so there is no compatibility or lack of trim support issues obviously.

I have disabled scheduled weekly optimizations in the defrag/optimize tool which prevents it from attempting to defrag when the control penal maintenance attempts its maintenance when the computer is idle.

I want to let everyone know that this is happening so others are aware. My other computers that have the latest update are also doing it.

    Just discovered that while I had no earlier Even Error 264 when using the Defragment and Optimizer  when selected from Windows Administrative Tools after upgrade to Version 2004, and it only appeared after running the Automatic Maintenance selection from the Security and Maintenance Control Panel, it now is appearing any time the Defragment and Optimization program runs. And while the error specifies that the Optimizer could not complete the retrim of the OS(C) (SSD), the status indication on the display of the Defragment and Optimization, indicates a 0% fragmentation remaining, and a full completion of the cycle. Looks like Microsoft has left another unfixed issue with a new version release. Hope they fix this soon.

    Would just like to add I am having this issue, "Event Error 264-Defrag-Storage Optimizer could not complete retrim on OS(C)"- (SSI Hard Drive), after recent update to Version 2004. It seems to only occur when the Optimizer performs it's operation when Automatic Full System Maintenance is performed through the Security and Maintenance Control Panel. Selecting Defragment and Optimizer manually through Windows Administrative Tools had no conflict, and operation completed normally with 0% Fragmentation remaining. 

    Seeing this, and now that I am aware of this problem being a known issue with this new May-2020 Update, I will refrain from using Automatic Maintenance and perform my maintenance manually through selectin the Defragment and Optimizer Tool. Hope Microsoft addresses this issue.. 🤣

    Sorry I don't know, I don't have an SSD on my laptop, but a Hitachi 320 GB HDD storage. I'm going to take a nap first, don't disturb me.

    yes it's a known problem in Windows 10 May 2020 Update, but I have no problems other than the words "Never Optimized, Ok (6% Fragmented)" (Last checked yesterday Wednesday, July 15, 2020) because my laptop is still using HDD.

    Here are the specifications of the laptop I use:

    TOSHIBA Satellite L645

    CPU: Intel Core I3 350M

    RAM: 2GB DDR3 Speed 1067 Mhz

    Storage: HDD 320GB SATA AHCI Mode

    Driver: Up to Date

    The end. I want to take a nap first, this time zone is GMT + 7 (Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta). 😪

    Windows defrags ssds once a month ....with the new technology of ssds ....defragging once a month does nothing but keep the life of the ssd. Please do some research on ssds and windows. The only bug is that windows defrag wont retain the defrag history. You should set  auto defrag to once a month is you have an ssd. Manual maintenance is in case of need to.

    According to Scott Hanselman of Microsoft, Windows 7 and later do defragment a solid-state disk (SSD) but in a completely different way. There is less incentive for defragmentation of SSDs because file fragmentation has less performance impact on them and they handle a finite number of storage cycles before their lifespan expires. However, file systems cannot support infinite file fragmentation as they reach their metadata limit. In addition, Microsoft Drive Optimizer is also responsible for performing the TRIM command on SSDs.

    So do you think we should leave disk optimizer enabled and forget about it?

    My advice is to turn off your SSD and if you are like me and also have an HDD for storage I would keep the HDD on defrag once a month. There is a bug with this and it is not just retaining the history of it. Many bug reports have been submitted through the Feedback Hub by users.
