Windows 10 2004 optimization/defrag bug

Hi all

I've just completed the Windows 10 2004 upgrade and I have noticed 2 issues.

  1. When I manually trim my SSD in the drive defrag/optimize tool in windows and I reboot it says 'never optimized' when i go back. I heard this was a bug in insider preview which they obviously didn't fix. 
  2. I happened to have the defrag/optimize tool open at the same time as Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance, I initiated a manual maintenance and I caught windows defragging my SSD and then it trimmed it straight afterwards. If i click the optimize button in defrag/optimize tool it only trims it and not defrag.

This seem to only happen when Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance initiates its automatic maintenance or if I select start maintenance.

This is concerning as it should never attempt to defrag an SSD.

My laptop is only a few months old and came with a PCIe SSD and Windows 10 1909 so there is no compatibility or lack of trim support issues obviously.

I have disabled scheduled weekly optimizations in the defrag/optimize tool which prevents it from attempting to defrag when the control penal maintenance attempts its maintenance when the computer is idle.

I want to let everyone know that this is happening so others are aware. My other computers that have the latest update are also doing it.

    man... there is something wrong that when the windows maintanance starts, it will trim AND DEFRAG any volume, if it is a SSD will do both, if is a HDD will try to do both, TRIM will fail in this case and will be an alert on windows event viewer for that...

    you can try on your own computer, enable defrag, starts on windows maintanance and it will defrag it, the worse problem is that, everytime you reboot your computer, windows dont know that it has done the maintanance on the SSD, and will do that again on the next schedule... in the worst scenario, windows will defrag and trim all the SSD and HDD and anyother volume on the system, everyday if the person reboots the computer or turns off and on everyday

    Turn off Defragment. Run by hand every now and then. No damage to your SSD, problem solved. Today, modern systems and their SSD and Hard Drives Don't need to be defragged as often.

    Can you read? Can you think? Defrag tool WONT defrag a SSD, it just sends TRIM, no defrag happening.

    Really? then kindly explain why initiating "Maintenance" starts with the message " defrag ... etc" also if the drive is SSD, it has been mentioned here ad nauseam .. or did they get program messages FUBAR at MS as well?

    not using a function that is there to make the computer better, is not a fix to the problem, i just think the problem is that defrag is not storing the last time the defrag run on the SSD, should be a simple fix, probrably a permission on a file or something, but just because of that, a lot of people who dont know anything about computer will lose their SSD sooner

    Turn off Defragment. Run by hand every now and then. No damage to your SSD, problem solved. Today, modern systems and their SSD and Hard Drives Don't need to be defragged as often.
