Windows 10 version 2004 "Your Device is not ready"

dbellis, the original release date was 2004, not 2007, or 8, or 9. If it's not stable then tell us what area is an issue and let us decide to proceed or not, otherwise don't bother releasing it. I'm stuck with 2 machines that won't update with this arcane message and I like others would change the hardware to a configuration that fits knowing what the area of pain is. This is a replay of update hell and really does not instill confidence in the product.

I have two modern desktops, both AMD based systems. Neither was ready for update. Both have MSI motherboards (one is a Carbon AC B450 with an R5 3600 running Home the other the X570 Unify with a 3800X running Pro). There are some commonalities, such as both use Realtek (though different) audio devices, Intel Bluetooth, and Intel WiFi. I recently had to reinstall Windows due to a strange issue on the B450 system. Unfortunately I couldn't find the 1909 install media so I installed 2004. The audio did not function. The Windows audio troubleshooter was able to fix it though (there was a problem with audio effects according to the troubleshooter). It could be the Realtek audio drivers are one of the things that may cause you to be held back. I know some GPU drivers can also be an issue for both nVidia and AMD unless you are on the latest drivers (which I was on both systems, and continue to be; given one runs nVidia and the other AMD, I'm pretty sure it's not GPU drivers in my case).

I personally really want 2004 for WSL2 for my X570 machine as it will allow me to retire some old Linux systems I keep around for personal firmware/software engineering.

I would love it if I could find out why Microsoft has decided I can't update and let me override their choice if I am willing to take on the risk. For example, this machine doesn't use WiFi; it uses its Realtek 2.5 interface. If the WiFi drivers won't work in 2004 I really don't care. However, if the audio was guaranteed to not work I'd continue to wait, as an example.

If you willing to take the risk then take the 2004 ISO downloaded from MS and do an upgrade. If it works out great. If it doesn't than make sure you have made proper backups (in advance) so you have your data. But please... don't come back and blame MS for your issues.

Thanks man I really thought something was wrong with my PC.  I was about to re-install windows because of this which is a pain to be honest but thanks anyway helped.

I will just point out I also have a pretty modern hardware and it costs about 1300$ to anyone else who has the same problem.

I have had two failures . Both of them occurred from the windows update assistant. Both machines are quite capable. I had time after the first failure to update from a 2004 image on usb . That worked fine. If you do not have a ton of data to back up and restore. I suggest just doing a fresh image.
