The new Update is here! Windows 10 2004.

I installed 2004 on 10/1 and I had no problems with the install; however, it removed iCloud from my computer so I had to install iCloud from the web so I could get my contacts and calendar.  Then it uninstalled my Office Home and Business 2019 software for Outlook and replaced it with Office 365 which I don't even have a subscription to.  I'm not technical by any means and I hate all these "Updates" that mess with my settings!

Important notes:

Check a few things on the PC where you want to install Windows 10:

• 64-bit or 32-bit processor (CPU). You’ll create either a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows 10. To check this on your PC, go to PC info in PC settings or System in Control Panel, and look for System type.
• System requirements. Make sure the PC meets the system requirements for Windows 10. We also recommend going to the PC manufacturer's website for additional info about updated drivers and hardware compatibility.
• Language in Windows. You'll need to choose the same language when you install Windows 10. To see what language you're currently using, go to Time and language in PC settings or Region in Control Panel.
• Edition of Windows. You should also choose the same edition of Windows. To check what edition you're currently running, go to PC info in PC settings or System in Control Panel, and look for Windows edition. Windows 10 Enterprise isn’t available in the media creation tool. For more info, go to the Volume Licensing Service Center.
• Microsoft Office products. If you just purchased a new device that includes Office 365, we recommend redeeming (installing) Office before upgrading to Windows 10. Yes, Microsoft has produced a vast quantity of over-functionalised hungry applications that clunky, confusing and aren't road-tested and unleashes them on the paying customer who's now no more than a testing guinea pigs.

After reading these complete horror stories, My solution is to ignore the "VERSION 2004".

It is an optional update not automatic.

So; when I check for updates I refuse to  click on the "download and install FEATURE UPDATE TO WINDOWS 10, VERSION 2004".

Both my PC and Laptop run beautifully with no issues with their current versions.

SOLUTION.... If it aint broke, don't fix it.... ignore the manual update option.

Your lucky, ive lost everything and theyve made changes in the way they do updates, and appeared to have fixed the glitches. Alot of this has to do with the NEW Security Intelligence updates and the Defender Application and conflicts with Cloud and Toolbars. 

I just installed the 20236.1000 update, and I had my first serious problem. It may, or may not, mimic your situation. I have 5 HDD's and 1 SSD. 1 HDD is a 1TB 2.5" in an enclosure. I mention that because, here's what happened:

I ran the update routinely as I have all of the other updates, and it ran flawlessly..., or so I thought! After logging in there was no desktop. I use 3 monitors and the backgrounds are managed with gPhotoShow, with a folder of pics of classic cars. Well, after logging in there was 1 '63 Galaxy 500, white over red, fastback, and it was on all 3 monitors. That's not supposed top happen. But what else was happening was a message "Please insert a disc in DVD RW D:". I also have 2 DVD RW in the system. But even more notable was that there were no icons on my desktop. I did a lot of GOOGLE searches, and there were MS answers.microsoft.com sites with solutions that were completely NOT helpful. So, I got ThisPC to display my drive inventory and I noticed something different. I had tried opening files from the icons in the Start menu, but I would get another strange message that the files (Word files) could not be found at D:\Documents\xyz". Before the update, D: was a 4 TB HDD that houses my OneDrive files. That drive had been renamed, and searching with the new drive letter wasn't giving me any love. So I opened Disk Manager and renamed the drives the way they should've been named, and now, all is well.

This may have nothing to do with what was going on with you, but I put this out there because it is update related, just in case.
