After numerous hours (I lost count) the update finally concluded on my HP laptop running the home version. Apart from some changed options and settings, everything looks good so far. Nevertheless I think that this will be the last major update on this 9-years old system. It's becoming simply too old and too slow for the current (and future) Windows versions.

But actually, I would advise most people to wait until it shows up in Windows Update:

That way you give the various manufacturers plenty of time to send out any patches that may be necessary before you install this major update.

I DID wait. It was there on Thursday. Clearly, Microsoft did not do what they said they did and they sent it out to computers a) knowing there were issues and b) to computers with which it was not compatible. I'm still stuck in BSOD and no one seems to be able or willing to help.

I used the Windows 10 Update Assistant available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and had no problems.
