As of May 28th 2021, i got a forced update to build 20H2 from 1909, cause it is no longer supported. I still got those freezes with the 2 newest versions of Windows, even after 1 year when i also tried once the 2004 build for one day back in June 2020. The freezes mostly occur, when the PC is in idle for about 20 minutes or just totally random. The system locks up completly, screen frozen and only way to get it back up running is to press the reset button and do a hardreset. So i rolled back again to 1909, even though its no longer supported. But with 1909 my system just runs perfectly and never crashes or freezes.

I also tried everything which i could find in the web search. Reinstalling drivers after the update, sfc scans etc, but none of it helped. Build 2004 and 20H2 always freezes with my system.

Another weird thing i noticed while testing the 20H2 is that my data drive ( a WD Black 6 TB HDD ) never turns off, even though it is set in energy options, to do so, after 20 min of inactivity. It is constantly reading or writing for no reason. The OS itself is on a Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD. In version 1909, this weird behaviour never occurs.

I am out of ideas now and need help. Has anyone an idea what is causing this or is microsoft even aware of it? Or is it some sort of incompatibility with specific hardware or drivers ? I am stuck now with 1909 and cant use a newer version, cause it renders my system unusable. I have the choice now between a version which is no longer supported but works perfectly fine (1909) or a new version which has security updates but freezes every 10 or 30 mins. Not a great choice and situation really to be at.

    My specs:

    CPU: Intel i7-5960X

Motherboard: Asus Rampage V Extreme (X99 Chipset)

RAM: 32 GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR 4 3000 Mhz (Quad Channel)

    Cooling: Corsair H100i GTX

GPU: RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edtion

Powersupply: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 1000 Watt

OS drive: Samsung 970 Pro 1 TB m.2 SSD

Secondary drive: Samsung 860 Pro 2 TB SSD

Data drive: WD Black 6 TB HDD

    Monitor: Asus PG348Q ROG

Mouse: Logitech G903 and G POWERPLAY wireless charging pad

    Keyboard: Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum

    Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster ZxR

Same Problems . About 40 Clients (Windows 10 20H2 now!) all Updates on Windows 10  and Office.

    Different Hardware (Dell/Noname/HP ...).

Same Problems since 10/2020 . Begin with 1 PC after Update to Windows 10 / 2004 (firszProblem !) and then 20H2. First only one user of  35 with freeze!

On 3 differet PCs - same User - same problems - allways outlook 2013 freeze - random! Then Update to Office 2016.  Same user - same Problems.  Outlook / Raming profile deleted! And again - same user - same problems!

Now after update of all PCs to 20h2 - we have 8 Users from 35 with same problem.  Outlook freeze /  random / white scree for many minutes!. After 2-10 minutes  it works again!

The other Users have NO PROBLEMS!!!!!!

ALL UPADETS are  UpTodate! All Windows and Office Updates. Start in safe mode, plugins disabled etc etc etc!!!!

I will not delete the AD User/Mailboxes! - we have software for emailarchiving. I must wait for an Fix! Or i must install all Windows with 1909 again????

I read in many Forums but no fix is aviable.  Please help!

I upgraded to Win 10 v2004 and started experiencing strange issues with momentary freezes when saving a file. And when I delete files they look like they aren't deleted. It took me awhile to release that the system is not refreshing so I had to refresh. This is also impacting Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) v4. As that application relies heavily on windows Explorer file system it just stops responding for several minutes comes back and then freezes for a longer period of time. The application is virtually useless which means I can't work.

Sadly, I can't roll back to v1909 because I didn't create a restore point before I updated. I really miss the days when Windows automatically created restore points before it updated. So I upgraded to v20H2 - same issue with the random freezes.

I am a small business owner, a sole proprietor, this is impacting my livelihood now.

What can I do to get Explorer stable so that it isn't impacting applications that are relying on it, like Canon DPP?

I found, meanwhile, that uninstalling any of the recent PowerToys version in 20H2 does ease - not entirely remove - the issue and makes 20H2 working quite well.

It seems that the integration of PowerToys with Windows Explorer does somehow add to the freezing. After uninstalling, at least with my machine, I found around 70% less freezing per hour (incident count went down from 10 to around 3 times).

Thanks, this removed the freezes for me. I was on PowerToys v20, upgrading it as well and seeing if the issue persists.
