Windows 10 version 2004 Randomly freezes

The most recent version of 2004 works absolutely fine.  Roll back and reinstall.

This is very strange because the first install of 2004 was failed in a catatrophic manner with blocking and cyclic freezes, so I proceeded to restore the 1909 from Synology because I did a patch cleanup due to blocking slowness.

After the restore, it's back to normal, so there is no problem with the defective drivers or hardware. A month later, I tried a second time an upgrade from 1909 again in 2004, and now everything is working but with a very small slowdown.

So I didn't have any windows drivers/software/etc modification. Why this cyclic blocking without any error message in the eventlog (system/application/install) ?

Since Windows 10 v2004 isn't Insider Preview any more, I would like to say: I do have the issue as well. Independently whether installed as up(g/d)a(d/t)e on the same machine or fresh install. Randomly but consequently, Windows hangs, as it didn't do before over the past year.

I found it is always something Windows Explorer causes - since drivers, independently of which device and independently whether MS or manufacturer provided, are still working whilst Windows Explorer just takes its '5 minutes' and more to do ??? and than works for a while again.

If the system is fresh booted, this behavior happens around an 1h later the first time, independently on what I am doing on the device. After a day or two not rebooted, every 10 Minutes I have some coffee minutes to take.

I also found that, if I am not working with virtual desktops - which are kind of broken since Windows 10 v2004 anyways - and deleted all of them, I can work smoothly over the coming days - however, even with 4 physical monitors, I need those virtual desktops since resources don't allow me right now to compensate with more physical hardware.

So I don't know if this is leading in the right direction in terms of fixing the freezing issue - but at least I do have a work around in my case which isn't good but working.

I have also complete VS2019 development stack, diverse other development software, O365 and more installed. If I am installing a previous Windows 10 version with identical software stack (thanks to WDS ;)) and with most recent drivers etc., everything is smoothly working, even with all updates except the 2004 upgrade.

Hence I am pretty sure, the issue came with 2004.

In terms of used hardware, just in case that indicates something in addition (not overclocked):

Threadripper 1950x

128GB DDR4 RAM

Radeon Vega 65

M.2 2TB Samsung SSD Pro

Raidcontroller with Expansion, 10 Hdd + 6 SSD + ...)

Displays: 3x 1920*1080 (DisplayPort) + 1x 2560x1440 (HDR / HDMI)

10GB Asus NIC + 1GB on Board NIC (ASUS Prime x399-a)

Average all system + components temperature: ~50C, in current summer time: 55C.

For two days, it now works correctly as of the new August patch with Microsoft Windows 2004 [version 10.0.19041.388].

And also, I updated the NVIDIA drivers, the official version of Avast (utlimate) not free now. nothing for the DELL driver actually!

Seems safe and no freezing at the moment.

But I never received a response to confirm this problem ...

I have the same problem, and also a "solution"

• Go to Settings, and open Windows Insider Program
• Keep that window open. It can be in the background, but just don't minimize it

This completely stops the freezing. I spend a long time trying to figure out why, but could not. Maybe someone else can.

A problem is that one cannot use the Settings to change or review any other settings, because as soon as one leaves "Windows Insider Program," the freezing restarts.

Can anyone give me a tip in exchange? Is there any way to install the pre-2004 build?  I tried all the ways Windows allows, but those give errors. Can I get a pre-2004 install download somewhere?
