According to this post it should be fixed already in Insiders Build (currently Dev Channel only).
Airpods Pro: very bad quality in Headset mode on Windows 10
Dear all,
I've got my new Airpods Pro, they work well with my iPhone.
Also on Windows 10 via bluetooth, sound quality is good when using the "Airpods stereo" mode.
However, in the headset mode ("Airpods Hands-Free AG Audio") sound and especially microphone quality is extremely bad. I tried to change the default format (see screenshot, it's only 8000Hz), but I cannot change it as it's grey. Any advice to get a better microphone quality?

2021-12-10T22:20:54+00:00 There appears to be another issue still with windows Bluetooth, I haven't determined whether it's windows drivers or if everyone complaining has Bluetooth 4.0. But there is a fix by buying an external Bluetooth 5.0 USB adapter. This doesn't make sense as drivers are provided by the Bluetooth manufacturer thus it's not a windows issue. This would lead me to believe everyone limited to telephone quality have 4.0 Bluetooth in their windows machine which can not handle 2-way audio. I just bought a BT 5.0 adapter and I'm going to test it as soon as I get home and I will post if I can get a headset.

2022-01-09T10:09:19+00:00 You are just confusing other people. There are only 2 possibilities on Windows. Period.
- Headset - very bed audio quality, but you can use mic
- Headphones - normal quality, but you can NOT use mic
You cannot set spatial audio on Headset, only on Headphones. You just most likely just switched to using Headphones as your audio output device and you didn't notice. Although having that set is useful, don't get me wrong.
You cannot use both at the same time as iPhone and Mac does, this is an issue of Windows.
There are no bluetooth headphones that don't have this issue.
And one more really cool feature is, that if you switch to Headphones while some application is using the mic from headset, you wouldn't hear anything.
Since I mainly bought Airpods for using with Windows I returned them.
