Airpods Pro: very bad quality in Headset mode on Windows 10

Dear all,

I've got my new Airpods Pro, they work well with my iPhone.

Also on Windows 10 via bluetooth, sound quality is good when using the "Airpods stereo" mode.

However, in the headset mode ("Airpods Hands-Free AG Audio") sound and especially microphone quality is extremely bad. I tried to change the default format (see screenshot, it's only 8000Hz), but I cannot change it as it's grey. Any advice to get a better microphone quality?

According to this post it should be fixed already in Insiders Build (currently Dev Channel only).

This is not true. I used airpods pro with a new lenovo laptop and they worked great as a headset. Now i'm trying to use them with an older one and they don't work as expected, meaning that there is an issue with the bluetooth chipset on the older laptop.

There is no "problem" per se. It works as intended by the Bluetooth specs.

The Bluetooth specs govern thousands of hardware manufacturers and ten of thousands bluetooth devices. It is a limitation of the bluetooth specs.

What Microsoft is "fixing" is merely the elimination of the confusing 2 profiles shown to end-users, so no "showing" it to you --- but it is still govern by the limitations of the 2 profiles.

Apple went outside the bluetooth specs for their Apple hardware universe to make AirPods seamless. So are the various high end bluetooth headsets like Bose that requires you to install a separate Bose app on your iphone or android phone. But since Bose doesn't make an app for MacOS, Windows OS or Linux or on your car --- those Bose bluetooth headsets are just as useless in the desktop realm.

Thank you, I confirmed win 10 support HSP 1.71, but it seems my laptop Dell xps 13 didn't include a BT chipset capable of HSP 1.6 or above, so I got a poor mic quality, now I just buy a USB dongle jabra 370 to replace my on-board BT, that dongle support HSP 1.6, now I got a wide band mic up to sampling 16KHz
