Airpods Pro: very bad quality in Headset mode on Windows 10

Dear all,

I've got my new Airpods Pro, they work well with my iPhone.

Also on Windows 10 via bluetooth, sound quality is good when using the "Airpods stereo" mode.

However, in the headset mode ("Airpods Hands-Free AG Audio") sound and especially microphone quality is extremely bad. I tried to change the default format (see screenshot, it's only 8000Hz), but I cannot change it as it's grey. Any advice to get a better microphone quality?

According to this post it should be fixed already in Insiders Build (currently Dev Channel only).

    It's absolutely not good enough that Microsoft has failed to get this working especially given the circumstances with a lot more people working remotely. The fact that in 2021, you can't use Microsoft Teams on Windows 10 with a Bluetooth headset without having to fork out for a 3rd party adapter is just ridiculous.

    I've been watching this thread for quite a while now with no real solutions until I read about the DG80 Avantree.  Decided to give it a try and it works great with my Apple Airpods Pro.  Zoom, Google Meet, Bluejeans, Teams conference calls all sound great now and my airpods mic works too.  Can't believe it took a full year into a pandemic and hundreds of conference calls later to get this to work.  Just a shame that it had to be an additional $30 USB device that did the trick and not a simple Windows 10 update.

    The solution to this problem is a work around - get a DG80 or DG60 from Avantree. It registers as a sound card. Then all you do before a call is double tap the button on the dongle and it switches to talk mode. This enables 16khz/HFP 1.6 enabled on the Air Pods Pro or any headset and works fine for anything you use because the app you're using only sees the dongle as a sound card.

    Really frustrating windows continues to be **** here. My AfterShockz connect at 16khz/HFP 1.6, but the Air Pods Pro only connect at 8khz natively.

    thank you! i was looking into this and thinking about using a Jabra product but this looks better. i also have an AfterShokz headset i really want to use but haven't been able to. buying the DG80 now
