Windows 10- Locks up "waiting for cache"

Window 10 was working very well until recently after upgrading to Windows Edge chrome (or at least the is the only event that I can associated to this issue) I am getting persistent OS stalls or "not responding" that affect all applications when running Edge. Common to see "waiting for cache" in lower left browser window when the the entire system stalls and stops responding. Common to see the cursor hour glass for 30 or more seconds before system and affected applications start to respond normally.

So I see the 'waiting for cache issue' too on Chrome, which eventually locks the entire PC.

This is on a brand new custom PC, running AMD Ryzen and NVMe SSD disk..  Edge Chromium was installed automatically with the Win 10 2004 update - but I've just uninstalled Edge Chromium now . Will see if that makes a difference...

I am having this too, and I have been running the Edge Chromium beta channel since January and it only started recently after an OS update.  I am going to try disabling all extensions first.

As a similar, possibly related issue - explorer is also freezing and task manager stops updating.  Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL seems to also clear up everything, including the "waiting for cache" issue.

FYI, this is on a Microsoft Surface Pro 7

I have had enough of it! Since Windows Edge update to chrome I continue to be frustrated by two issues. #1 is by far the most annoying and disruptive to my daily workflow. #2 is less annoying but still creates inexcusable GUI behavior.

    1. As noted in the beginning of this thread "Waiting for Cache" is a persistent behavior that started with Edge transition to chrome. The behavior was not seen in Google chrome until after Edge chrome was installed. Numerous attempts to uninstall/reinstall Google and Edge were ineffective. Running only one not the other was ineffective resolving this issue regardless of which browser is running.
    2. I frequently visit some websites that have user login preferences like "Stay Logged In" and "Recognize this workstation" to avoid double authentication and/or privacy questions. Just like stated in #1. These user, ease my way, features stopped working when Edge chrome was install for the first time and remained persistent regardless of efforts to set user login preferences at every login and also infected Google Chrome.

As of today it is my understanding that Edge Chrome has become embedded into the Windows 10 OS and can not be uninstalled. However, I can choose to never launch it again.

I have uninstalled Google Chrome and have no intention to re-install. I have gone back to install one of my old favs Mozilla Firefox

Using Firefox (as others in this thread have mentioned) seems to have resolved both issues #1 and #2.

note1: I did see one very brief  "waiting for cache" even with Firefox, but it was very brief and, if I hadn't been looking for it, I would not have notice it and there was no lock up of Win10 OS or other apps running at the time. Worth noting but not consequential to my workflow.

After months of dealing with this I have finally solved the issue!

    I have an SSD.

    Bios was set to IDE.

Set pc to boot into safe mode.

    Changed the configuration to AHCI.

    Restarted to boot normally.

    Issue no longer presents.
