Yes, the Photo & Video Import app does in fact work, just like the photo app used to. Nothing special in the app, but it does allow you to import your photos properly. thanks

I went back to trawling the internet for a solution and I found an app on the Microsoft Store called Photo & Video Import which performs exactly the same functions as Microsoft Photo App version 2020.19081.28230.0 ie it is possible to select "Import All" or "Import New" followed by the possibility to "Delete imported content from your device"...

You dont' mention if this import is from a phone, camera, SD card or how you're trying to import them since there are multiple ways.
