Forza Horizon 4 - Game crashes - I have the solution

Hi.

I see many Forza Horizon 4 threads or other games using Windows 10 and the support consultants tells people to uninstall the Windows 10 1909-build update/KB from peoples PC. Forza devs recommends to uninstall it.

One thing that fixed every game and loading crash or when alt-tabbing was to go into the task manager on my PC after launching the game and I had to go to Taskmanager -> Processes -> from here I had to end the task: Xbox Game Bar.

After I did that, I no longer have game crashes after loading my save, starting a multiplayer session or when alt-tabbing from the game.

Just wanted to let you all know that it was all a Xbox Game Bar-bug while using Windows 10 1909-build. It's not recommended to uninstall a big build-update containing several security and Windows-patches that are recommended to have on a PC, but what the heck: If that is what I must do to play Forza, I rather do that to be able to play.

Update 2021: A full reinstall of a a newer build than Windows 10 1909, also lets me play Forza - for the ones that consider doing it. Build 2004 works fine. I won't update past that build, until Forza Horizon 5 comes in the future, which will most definitely make sure that I won't play Horizon 4 anymore.

These builds works with or without clean-installs with Windows 10. Try both a clean install or rollback to these builds:

Windows 10, build 1809 (still a bit unstable while using Windows, but works well ingame without performance-loss).
Windows 10, build 2004 (The most stable build for Windows 10-usage, Forza Horizion 4 and other games which I have played and still play)

When you have installed or rolled back to one of these to Windows 10-builds, follow this guild, scroll down the website and follow everything for "Option 3":
https://www.cleverfiles.com/howto/disable-update-windows-10.html    <--- What this guide using method 3 does, is helping you to disable automatic updates on your Windows 10 PC, so that the PC never updates to a newer Windows 10 build, unless you go to Windows Update and click on "Download". This makes sure that you won't be upgraded to the Windows 10 builds below, which don't work for this game.

These Windows 10-builds don't work well with Forza Horizion 4:

Windows 10, build 1903
Windows 10, build 1909
Windows 10, build 20H2

    Hi.

Also do the last step in this guide to disable Game Bar permanently (disable using local group policy): https://www.minitool.com/news/disable-windows-10-xbox-game-bar-001.html

Don't forget to exit MSI Afterburner og EVGA Precision completely if u have it running on your PC. If you have any settings you need to apply from those programs, then do it first and then exit them.

Also if you get crashes alot while alt-tabbing, make a .bat file with these like this.

Open notepad on your PC and copy-paste these lines and select "All files" and Save it on your desktop as Forza.bat:

    @echo off

    START explorer.exe shell:appsFolder\Microsoft.SunriseBaseGame_8wekyb3d8bbwe!SunriseReleaseFinal

    TIMEOUT /T 70 /NOBREAK taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

    :LOOP TASKLIST | FIND /I "FORZAHORIZON4" >nul 2>&1 IF ERRORLEVEL 1 ( GOTO CONTINUE ) ELSE ( ECHO fh4 is still running TIMEOUT /T 5 GOTO LOOP )

    :CONTINUE

    START explorer.exe EXIT

Run the .bat file after starting the game. What this file does, is making the game run in "Window mode fullscreen", and the game should not crash when alt-tabbing.

Hi Brør. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

If this is repeatedly happening then there are known fixes for Game bar here to also try to see if it's more pemanent:

See latest fixes working for Game Bar here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402858...

    https://www.askvg.com/fix-game-bar-is-not-openi...

    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/cant-record-righ...

If that doesn't help then Reset Game Bar in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Xbox Game bar > Advanced Options.

If that doesn't help then re-register Xbox Game bar from Option 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...

And if that doesn't help then uninstall Game Bar in App Settings above, restart PC, reinstall Game Bar from Microsoft Store Settings > My Library.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I still get crashes after trying your suggestions. I thought the crashes was gone, but it happens all of a sudden if im racing, are in the world map on Forza H4 or just start the game and press on continue. It also happens in other games using the Xbox Beta app.

I reverted every step i did on my original posts with Game Bar disabled and such, but I still crashes with Game Bar enabled or disabled.

I also installed the gforce driver v. 436.30 as suggested from the official forums for Forza since its a known issue with new gforce drivers with crashes. I still get crashes.

I downloaded this game from the Xbox Game Pass-subscription I have. I don't own the game but play it using a monthly subscription.

Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

None of these suggestions worked. I am currently trying to use the Windows built-in account "Administrator" to see if that helps. Many around the web have said that it works. If we do that, the game will be elevated using admin-rights. If starting the game and playing the game using another account, even if that user account have admin-rights, it won't start using admin-rights and there is no way to right-click on the Forza H2 shortcut and select "Run as administrator" as usual with other games.

I will get back to you If running the game using the account "Administrator" works. If that works, I will continue to use that account on regular basis instead of my other account that I had to create during the clean Windows-installation steps.
