I am trying to use zoom on my Windows 10 HP laptop, but the microphone and speaker drop off after just a short time. My speaker is a "Realtek". What settings should I be using? I have both the speaker and microphone set to work with the app.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a recording app I was using called Loom. As soon as the free version ran out and it went to the free version I had no audio on Zoom even using a headset. Happened on my husbands laptop too after I installed Loom on there. I had to dial into my Zoom meetings by phone!
As soon as I uninstalled the app we had audio on both laptops.
So it could be a recording or similar app interfering with your audio.
To add some context, i have this happen, but it ONLY drops for ZOOM. the sound on the rest of my computer works - I can hear, for example, sounds coming from an internet tab, but NOT from zoom.
So far A temporary fix seems to be turning airplane mode on and off in quick succession to force it to "reset" but sometimes that only lats for 2 seconds.
I've also noticed it will drop my bluetooth connection to my headphones (theywill not appear for selection) but not to my sound bar (or vice versa, depending on which one i am actively listening through) - not that even when this happens, if I switch to my laptop speakers, the problem persists - I can hear windows noises, but no sound from Zoom.
So in short, sound drivers are working (at least in part), on the whole, but there is an issue getting it to zoom that seems to be affecting other sound devices
I have this problem with the Surface Pro 7. I can connect to a Zoom meeting with mic and speakers working great, then suddenly the mic just stops picking up through the meeting. If you do a test, the application picks up sound. Leaving and reentering Zoom does not fix the problem. Only rebooting.
I am also experiencing sound issues on a Dell XPS 13 running Windows 10. Never had a problem with Zoom until September 30th and all of a sudden my students can hear me and each other, but I cannot hear anyone. I've tried reinstalling sound drivers, reinstalling Zoom, trying it with Bluetooth off (just in case some other device I have is impacting the sound drivers) -- nothing seems to work. I'm hoping for a solution before my next class on Wednesday. Will keep investigating and post if anything works.
Just had a conversation with my Zoom rep. It appears there is a known issue with certain revisions of Realtek hardware in HP/Dell and Microsoft systems. The Zoom software has trouble communicating with the hardware in order to properly handle background noise suppression. The result is the Zoom software mutes the mic or locks the microphone hardware requiring a reboot.
Zoom is working to write code to be able to properly suppress background noise and adjust from low/medium/high or even disable to help with these issues. It's supposedly scheduled for inclusion in Version 5.4 of the Zoom software. Unfortunately, there is no ETA for release.
