I am trying to use zoom on my Windows 10 HP laptop, but the microphone and speaker drop off after just a short time.  My speaker is a "Realtek".  What settings should I be using?  I have both the speaker and microphone set to work with the app.

Mine is similar, but may not actually be the same. Mine starts out okay, but every 15 to 20 minutes (not exactly a set time, the microphone stops working. I get an affirmative message on the computer screen just above the mic icon (lower left of Zoom screen) reporting 'no sound from microphone. I am able to restore by just clicking the mic icon, but what a pain.

I don't sit at that computer (I use a standalone camera), so I don't know it's NOT working until a person at the other end says 'I can't hear anything.' Then I have to run over to the computer, push the mic icon a couple of times. It then restores sound but then 15 minutes (+/-) later, it's dead again.

My audio (for Zoom only -- all other applications fine) disappeared suddently and completely on September 30th. As soon as that meeting started, the students could hear me but I could not hear them. Every meeting since has been the same--no sound for me, only even though students can hear me just fine. After the initial problem on September 30th, the sound never worked again with Zoom (microphone is fine--just speakers), until I changed the settings as noted above today. I've tested it twice today since changing the settings and issue seems to be resolved -- I hope it's a permanent solution. But even if all I have to do is turn the Zoom App speakers back on in settings every day, it beats the workaround I was using!

@LDmaddig, is this fix about the audio disappearing several minutes into a session where it had already been working? Just checking if that's what you mean -- that the setting changes during a session.

The others can still hear me, but I can't hear them, and all other system sounds are working.

I have applied all the recent Windows updates (18363.1139), sound driver updates (Saffire Scarlett 18i8 3rd Gen USB), video updates (Radeon R9 200 series), and Zoom app updates. My cameras are coming in via an ATEM Mini USB.

Here's another piece of info: If I turn off and on the Saffire Scarlett audio interface, it reloads the drivers and the sound returns. That can't be done easily with an internal sound card, of course, so it's not likely most of the posters will have tried it. Once reloaded, the incoming sound works again, sometimes to the end of the session (my classes are 75 minutes), sometimes only for another few minutes before going silent again.

I'll report back if your solution works next time this happens during class.

    I just fixed it!!!!

After 3 weeks of not being able to hear my students on my laptop ZOOM session (had to join with a different Zoom account on my phone for audio, while using my laptop for video/screen sharing -- such a pain), I finally got my laptop speakers working in Zoom!

    Here's how:

While the Zoom meeting is open, go to Settings, open Sound settings---in that menu open Advanced Sound Options: "App Volume and Device Preferences".  If you do this when NOT in a meeting, you will get volume adjustment bars for your speakers (master sound) and your computer sounds (systems sounds). BUT, if you open this while in a ZOOM meeting you also get volume adjustment bars for ZOOM meetings. Mine were muted. All I had to do was turn them back on and all of a sudden I could hear everyone again.

    Hope this works for you.

    Lori
