I received an email stating I am being charged $199.00 for windows defender can this be true or is it a scam?

100% scam.

Windows defender comes free with Windows 10.

If you hover your mouse over any links you can then check them to see where they truly link too; I bet it isn’t Microsoft.

Have you received any strange phone calls purporting to be Microsoft/Windows techs stating you have a problem with Windows?

Just in case I would check with your bank or creating card provider to ensure this charge hasn’t been applied.

That's definitely a phishing email, a scam.

Mark it as spam and delete it.

    I recieved the same email this morning.I hope that there is someone that can do something about these scam emails.

    We Thank you on the completion of your 4.3 year

    Windows Defender protection plan with SMR WEB

    We have charged you $499.00 for the 4.3 YEARS of subscription from your account.

    We tried to contact you on your register number for queries but could not get through.

    Deduction of amount will appear on your account within 26 hours if you have any question or wish to cancel the renewal please connect us on with in 1.2 days other wise it will be automatically renew the service and the amount will be deducted automatically after that we can't do anything and the amount will be not refundable.

    So please contact within given hour.

    I received an email today that I owe 599.00 for Windows defender. I'm so upset but I read it's a scam. It seemed so real

    The more recent postings offered here says the scammers have stepped up their game. I also received an upgraded email that would influence most people claiming they are associated with Microsoft Windows, Inc., a manager’s name, a surreal address in Syracuse, NY.

    I am greatly disappointed the real Microsoft has not been effective in thwarting this evolving scam.

    So, ANY email that comes in that threatens charging money to renew MS Defender is a SCAM.

    IGNORE it, but if so motivated, hardcopy it, report it to local law enforcement, and flag it to your email service as spam.
