My headphone and mic jacks on my pc do not work and I have been trying for hours to get my on board sound working. I got the realtek drivers from my board manufacturer and every time I install them I get (Code 10 : Device cannot start.) I have tried updating and I have the newest driver so I am entirely stuck here.
I have tried many different realtek drivers and none work, not even the one supplied by the manufacturer so I would really appreciate if anyone could walk me through how to actually get my sound working.
I have a Z390 Phantom Gaming 4 board and Intel i5 9600K chip.

I don't know how that all works. But the High Definition Audio Controller under System Devices gets Microsoft drivers. The Realtek High Definition Audio device under Sound, Video & Game Controllers is where the Realtek drivers should install. That's all I'm saying.

Connor complicates his problem solving by not installing a nVidia audio driver --- his device manager shows High Definition Audio Device (which is Microsoft's generic audio driver) for his HDMI audio.
It looks like Bus 0 & Bus 1 have the right drivers, if they're both the same as mine. (How do you know what bus they are, BTW?) And the information about them at the Events tab (though different from mine) don't seem different enough from each other to justify why one should work & the other should not.
It leads me back to the theory that they can't both be active at once. You tried a monitor w/o speakers. But did you uninstall both the Bus 0 & Bus 1 drivers under System Device & reboot while it was connected?
If only one comes back, then try installing that codec, but not into System Devices..
That device is not an actual audio device. It is the southbridge pathway created by the CPU to transmit the Intel HD Audio Protocol to the actual realtek chip. There used to be a separate southbridge chipset, but Intel put the southbridge functions (now called PCH) inside the CPU as the CPU die shrinks.

Also after you reset the bios to default setting, "scan for new hardware" in device manager to see if the actual realtek chip would show up in sound, video and game controllers.
I don't know whether your suggestion is a cure. But don't expect to see Realtek under System Devices. Mine is also VEN_8086 with the same Microsoft drivers as his & works fine.
