2020-02 Updates KB4524244 Locks Up My Computer and Fails Install

I received the Patch Tuesday releases today.  KB4532693, KB4537759 and KB4538674 dropped in the first wave and all installed successfully.  On a subsequent "Check for Updates"  KB4524244 downloaded and installed but on the reboot, it rebooted the first time but froze hard on the second re-boot with Step 2 information and a frozen spinner on my screen, no keyboard or any access.  After about 15 mins I finally forced the system down.  On the reboot, my Secure Boot flagged me that the keys were corrupted.  I was able to get those repaired and reboot into the system.  I rebooted a couple more times but no updates attempted to install.  On a third "Check for updates, the same (KB4524244) update attempted to download but freezes the system at 94% on the download.  Again freezes hard requiring a hard re-set.  I tried flushing the Software Distribution cache but get the same results.

FYI:  I am running Windows defender with VBS (Credential Guard and Hypervisor enforced Code Integrity on an HP EliteDesk 705 G4 MT with a AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G with Radeon Vega Graphics.  I also have a similar set up running on an HP laptop (Intel i5), but the update installed fine on it.

    Does that still work after the reset? You'll only know when version 310 comes out, I guess.

    Presuming you've got the right BIOS & presuming the sites kept up with what Windows Update can fetch -- it makes yours a TP410UAR to have a 309 BIOS. All of the others have a lesser version at their site: A plain TP410UA has version 307; the TP410UR & TP410URR both have 308 as their highest version.     ...And set it for TP410UAR. Then check that all the other drivers have updated well after your last reset, as I posted earlier. Since you're taking it to a repair shop, I guess it can't be hurt much worse than it already is. But I would check the price of that shop against what ASUS would charge for the repair. They must know the computer best.

    I'll probably do that over the weekend. Its definitely Bios 309 because I took a phone photo of the bios screen when thats all that was working. Somehow I've changed and reset enough since the Feb 14th update that my laptop its finally somewhat stable as of tonight . It isn't crashing every 10 minutes to an hour. Its been okay for 2+ hours this evening but diagnostics show it still has issues. Thanks for the links.

    You are welcome. Glad to hear it.

    Well, after a reset or a clean install, it can take a day/so (if not a week/so) for Windows to fully update all its drivers & apps & to fetch the computer manufacturer's drivers, if available. Some of that can be seen happening in "View Reliability History" (ask Cortana). I hope the problems come fully to an end when all the drivers are current.

    (1) Do a little more research as to whether the computer really is a TP410UAR. Maybe there is something on the FAQS page at that site I missed. Maybe there is a hardware detection app somewhere on there. I'm sure there must be an ASUS community available too.

    (2) When all is really running well enough, make a Windows system image backup to freeze it in place. Of course, that won't capture BIOS or other firmware updates, though. And it doesn't help against hardware failures.

    Edit:  OK, I see you confirmed it is a TP410UAR. Very good.

    Thanks for all the info. We bought it at Best Buy and covered it with insurance. We have an appt with their Geek Squad tomorrow at noon. I’ll let you know what happens 🤞
