2020-02 Updates KB4524244 Locks Up My Computer and Fails Install

I received the Patch Tuesday releases today.  KB4532693, KB4537759 and KB4538674 dropped in the first wave and all installed successfully.  On a subsequent "Check for Updates"  KB4524244 downloaded and installed but on the reboot, it rebooted the first time but froze hard on the second re-boot with Step 2 information and a frozen spinner on my screen, no keyboard or any access.  After about 15 mins I finally forced the system down.  On the reboot, my Secure Boot flagged me that the keys were corrupted.  I was able to get those repaired and reboot into the system.  I rebooted a couple more times but no updates attempted to install.  On a third "Check for updates, the same (KB4524244) update attempted to download but freezes the system at 94% on the download.  Again freezes hard requiring a hard re-set.  I tried flushing the Software Distribution cache but get the same results.

FYI:  I am running Windows defender with VBS (Credential Guard and Hypervisor enforced Code Integrity on an HP EliteDesk 705 G4 MT with a AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G with Radeon Vega Graphics.  I also have a similar set up running on an HP laptop (Intel i5), but the update installed fine on it.

I have an issue that I believe is tied to this update as well.  I'm on a Lenovo laptop, I7 processor, Windows 10 home.

I started the laptop this morning and received the blue recovery screen.  However, none of the options on the recovery screen do anything.  I have a USB recovery drive and even when I plug that in and try to boot into recovery mode nothing happens.

The laptop installed this update mid week but we just shut down on Saturday night so when I logged in this morning this was the result.

I can't even get to any screens that allow me to get into my system to be able to uninstall this update.  Anyone else having this type of issue or does anyone have any workaround to get back into the system?

    (1) Which model Lenovo is it? Some have an Intel processor & some are AMD (the bad guy), but I'm unsure it really matters.

    (2) "I have a USB recovery drive and even when I plug that in and try to boot into recovery mode nothing happens."

    (a) Do you mean you can't boot to it - or it does boot but nothing on it will work?

For a Lenovo, the PF key for the Boot Options menu might be PF12, but varies by model.

    (b) Did you make it on this computer when the version was 1909?

A recovery drive should match the version of the installed Windows, but I guess 1903 might be a match.

    (3) Anyway, make an Installation USB drive as I posted to DustyKing1738. That one must match or exceed the installed version. You will have to be able to boot to it to either try its recovery environment or to do a clean install.

PCR - here are my answers.

    1. Thinkpad Yoga 15.  Intel I7 processor.

2a. I mean I cannot boot to it.  I can select the option to enter recovery mode from the screen shot I sent but when I do nothing happens.  Even when I try to boot to it from a shutdown, nothing happens.

2b. I updated the recovery drive in January 2020 and it was version 1903.  I was also incorrect above I am running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

    3.  I can't get option to boot into my recovery drive so if someone else does not post a potential fix then I guess a clean install is my only option -which is really a time suck and makes me really disappointed with Microsoft.  To the point of possibly not buying another Windows machine in the future.

    (1) When you press F1 on that screenshot, it tries to go to a Recovery Partition. It won't be there, if you chose to delete it at the end of making your USB Recovery drive.

    (2) I think the 1903 USB Recovery drive should boot & work. Plug it in, turn on the computer, & try PF12 at the Lenovo logo. You may have to press & hold it. Or maybe you have to repeatedly press/release it. When at the Boot Menu screen, select the UEFI option, if two are offered for the USB drive.

    (3) If that fails to boot, make & try Installation media. See whether you can get to its Recovery Environment.
