2020-02 Updates KB4524244 Locks Up My Computer and Fails Install

I received the Patch Tuesday releases today.  KB4532693, KB4537759 and KB4538674 dropped in the first wave and all installed successfully.  On a subsequent "Check for Updates"  KB4524244 downloaded and installed but on the reboot, it rebooted the first time but froze hard on the second re-boot with Step 2 information and a frozen spinner on my screen, no keyboard or any access.  After about 15 mins I finally forced the system down.  On the reboot, my Secure Boot flagged me that the keys were corrupted.  I was able to get those repaired and reboot into the system.  I rebooted a couple more times but no updates attempted to install.  On a third "Check for updates, the same (KB4524244) update attempted to download but freezes the system at 94% on the download.  Again freezes hard requiring a hard re-set.  I tried flushing the Software Distribution cache but get the same results.

FYI:  I am running Windows defender with VBS (Credential Guard and Hypervisor enforced Code Integrity on an HP EliteDesk 705 G4 MT with a AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G with Radeon Vega Graphics.  I also have a similar set up running on an HP laptop (Intel i5), but the update installed fine on it.

    Hi there,

    Finally took my computer in to be diagnosed and fixed. It all started with Windows 10 update. They said the hard drive was fried 😢

    Something with Bios etc. The hard drive was probably going anyway. I’m not a computer genius. We bought a nice battery back up to hopefully save the computer etc from power outages and power surges. They said all the re-boots probably weakened an already compromised hard drive. So, 150.00 plus later...we’re ok. 

    We pick it up tomorrow.

    I wanted to close the loop for anyone with a Lenovo laptop similar to mine.  There was/is a pin hole on the bottom of my ThinkPad Yoga that allowed me to bypass the Recovery screen and get into the BIOS.  I then changed the boot order in the BIOS so the USB drive was first (like it was previously and I'm still not sure if the updated caused this change or not).  I was able to boot from the USB drive and then do "recovery" without any data loss or re-formatting of the hard drive.  I did not know this feature existed so many others may not either.

    Good luck to all who are still dealing with this issue.

    What to do when you cannot even access windows? The update damaged my ssd drive, then i placed my old disk drive i had imaged it from and the update damaged it too?

    Hi There I am here to help :

    If you have tried all the above steps then the last one is that you have to simply uninstall this update as Microsoft recommends the same.

    For that you need to go to Control Panel>Programs & Features>Insttalled Updates> Then Simply Select The Update And Uninstall It.
