Cumulative updates - February 11th 2020

Well its of some small help to know I am not alone. I didn't seriously think I was but its nice to know. I agree with every word you wrote. Its a rip-off and a nerve-racking one too.

I have to go out for a walk to calm down. Have you seen the weather (UK)? "Calm" ! What is a word such as that doing on the MS / WIN Forum??

This is the 2nd time I have been negatively affected by a Windows 10 upgrade. The fall creator update of 2018 rendered the DVD drive and one of my USB ports on my HP I7 laptop inoperable. They came back months later with another windows update. Now I have an Acer with I7 processor 12GB of ram and a 1 terabyte SSD and this update trashed my user profile which was also my administrator profile. Luckily, removing the update immediately restored everything. I wonder is Apple OS has these kind of problems. To bad Linux is the only alternative to an operating system.

During reading one thought entered my mind regarding this update issue that I would like to share here. (Just to be sure.)

That it would be interesting to know if and how this temporary profile update issue also impacts people who have their personal profile(s) on an other disk (location) than the usual system C: disk (location).

With regard to your and others personal issues with disk space I can make some general remarks but I guess this thread isn't the right place for discussing details further.

If you actually have more than one disk in your Computer then there are several things you can adjust to create/keep more space on your C: disk.

Move/use personal files to/on the other (Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved).

Download the install to the other drive.

Move/use pagefile.sys to/on the other.

Whether or not you have more than one disk in your Computer there are several other things too.

Check Settings > System > Storage > View storage usage on other drives, Click drive C: to see first too.

Move/use personal profile to/on the other with Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Advancedtab, User profiles, Settings button.

Remove unused Windows Programs and Features in Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Resize hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys.

Use Free up diskspace, Feedback Hub settings and Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics settings.

Temporary files settings, Delivery Optimization settings. Clear browsers. Duplicates.

Control Panel > File history, versions disabled etc.

And one should not forget smaller contributions like HP specific (Move SWSetup to the other) or i.e. a Windows found.000 folder maybe?

Consider buying a larger disk and create a copying/cloning USB. Maybe you can make an internal copy by removing the extra disk temporarily.

Or one can also buy an external cable to make the copy/clone and replace C: disk with this (larger disk) as the permanent solution.

(And one can always save the smaller disk i.e. as a backup with the clean empty updated previous version if one gets this working.)

Wow - thank you for those suggestions. Very grateful of your time & trouble. I recognize some of them and indeed have already carried them out.

Other's though are entirely new ideas that I will have to study more closely. Before I do so may I just make one or two points as they occur to me.

1. I have made the space available as requested by MS but the installation has still failed many times.
2. On this HP Stream13 there is no possibility of expanding the SSD disk C:\ as it is soldered to the mother-board with no provision for extension. That said I see your suggestion to replace disk C:\  externally even though I don't fully understand it yet.
3. My 3rd point is to say again how unsatisfactory it is to need to do so much work & study, in order to restore a device to where it actually is now! I should also mention the lost machine access time whilst all these failed tries to update are taking place.
4. I am fortunate to have another machine (not mine) to use in order to make these enquiries to your good self and keep up to date with my emails etc. As a point of interest its is an older (C2011) Dell Inspiron running a UBUNTU OpSys. As sold it was WIN7 OS - but is chugging along well on UB. It's spec is much better than the HP Stream13 - but from my point of view it does the same job - perhaps due to slight differences that put me on a learning curve, not so easily as a WIN10 system. However I have to admit it does give one pause for thought. Is persisting with Windows products really worth the candle?
