It appears there is light at the end of the tunnel. MS is working on enhancing the HDR feature on Windows 10 to another level. With that there should be massive improvements in the way its implemented and work with games and the OS (I HOPE). I've personally called MS and escalated this to one of their engineers. Hope is on the way, see article below.

So if you install the latest Nvidia driver 451.48 or later combined with Windows 10 v.2004 it completely fixes the issue for me at least.. I see some post below of users saying it isn't working so I am changing the thread to not fixed.
I've tested past, current versions of Windows and scoured various forums for a fix. This is happening to many many people yet still not fixed... The Windows 10 Volume OSD turns HDR off or appears to have some sort of affect whilst adjusting the volume. When the Windows volume overlay appears on screen while HDR is enabled in fullscreen apps or games, the monitor goes dark. Once the overlay is off screen it turns back on. This is very annoying as I would like to use HDR without my screen turning off in the middle of competitive gaming. Also for what ever reason Nvidia Shadow play or recording doesnt work while HDR is enabled in Windows. Can someone make note of this and please fix it... I know this has been reported before but even on the insider additions of Windows the issues still resides.. :(
The only temp fix I can find is turning on your mouse trail in the mouse settings in windows.. This eliminates the issue but who the heck wants a mouse trail!

I've tried everything I could think of: software, drivers, cables, mouse trails... Finally, I used my "old" GeForce 950 GTX instead of my new (to me) 1650, and it works perfectly without jumping through any hoops. My 1650 is an Asus and my 950 is an MSI. I haven't had much luck with Asus over the years, and this may be my very last Asus product, but you know how hard it is to come by an okay newish video card these days.

I have my problem after 3 hard days fixed.
The issue is definitely in the OS Windows 10.
After switching the HD button the Monitor goes OFF (not off only shows the black screen) after you can´t extend screen or switch to screen 2. Only screen mirroring works.
Also when you close Laptop lid the both of monitor goes off despite what you adjust in the Energy management or power options in Device manager for USB.
I tried to reinstall all graphic drivers but no success.
I tried to update firmware from the monitor.
I fixed the issue with the TeamViewer.
I connected remotely from another device and switched off this bad HD switch.
Now is again good and everything works.
Hope this helps somebody with a same or similar issue.

Your issues is definitely an issue with HDR and your laptop but not the same issues as we're all talking about in this thread, just a heads up. The issue in this thread is specifically addressing the Windows Volume OSD causing the screen to go black while on screen. Maybe try to enable the mouse pointer trail, that's one of the only temp fixes for the original issue but super annoying because who wants a mouse trail.
Hi a have same issue with HP laptop and same monitor. I was trying to switch the HDR in Windows on. After doing this the monitor goes to show black screen (not sleep mode). The monitor is connected via USB cable and I'm any more able to switch the monitor on like before. The monitor works by screen mirror mode but when I close laptop lid it's goes black. I was trying to switch in power management in windows like do nothing by closing lid but I was not success. Also tried to adjust USB always on doesn't help. The same Monitor connected via HDMI cable work without any issue. Problem is only when connected via USB C cable also now I need always connect 2 cables :( what is unliked.
What exactly does this method do?
