To view HEIC/HEIF file on Windows 10 PC, the following 4 requirements are necessary.

  1. Update Windows 10 to 1809 or later
  2. In Microsoft Store, get the 'Microsoft Photos' (Released by Microsoft and Free) , and set it as Windows Default Photo Viewer
  3. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEIF Image Extensions' (Released by Microsoft and Free)
  4. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer' (Released by Microsoft and Free)

Please note, there are 2 versions of 'HEVC Video Extensions', one you have to pay for $1, another is free, get the free one from the following URL:

There is a FREE - as in NO

COST, NO BITCOINS (of any value), no Dollars. ****

FREE Codec Here:

Codecs.com | Downloads

for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

even though it SAYS 'Video', this enables HEIC support in

Windows.

again:

FREE Codec at:Codecs.com | Downloads for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

(free-codecs.com)

(I have no association with codecs.com, just trying to help...)

Yes, it'd be great if the free codec worked. 3/4 the time it doesn't work, and when the image does open up, it's extraordinarily blurry :(

I have spent countless hours on this problem. At first I'd try to import using the photos on window 10, that would always lock up.

Then I'd try to use Explorer to transfer photos from my iPhone to win 10, it would transfer but will not open in windows. It states that photo will not open due to format or update the app. Really? With Windows 7 it was a breeze, now I can't load and organize my pics. It is extremely frustrating and time consuming. I tried downloading the free fix from windows but the link doesn't work.

It's unbelievable how frustrating this is. It shouldn't take a programmer to download pics from your phone.
