To view HEIC/HEIF file on Windows 10 PC, the following 4 requirements are necessary.

  1. Update Windows 10 to 1809 or later
  2. In Microsoft Store, get the 'Microsoft Photos' (Released by Microsoft and Free) , and set it as Windows Default Photo Viewer
  3. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEIF Image Extensions' (Released by Microsoft and Free)
  4. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer' (Released by Microsoft and Free)

Please note, there are 2 versions of 'HEVC Video Extensions', one you have to pay for $1, another is free, get the free one from the following URL:

CAN SOMEONE MAKE THIS A STICKY??? (4th time of posting...)

There is a FREE - as in NO

COST, NO BITCOINS (of any value), no Dollars. ****

FREE Codec Here:

Codecs.com | Downloads

for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

even though it SAYS 'Video', this enables HEIC support in

Windows.

again:

FREE Codec at:Codecs.com | Downloads for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

(free-codecs.com)

(I have no association with codecs.com, just trying to help...)

How is this still a problem? None of the downloads from the Microsoft store work. Including the one that we have to pay a dollar for. Why is this not supported natively?

I have been doing battle with several clients for this issue. A few things I have learned.

    • A new Win 10 pro came with the HVEC codec, the Home did not
    • The free download on Codecs.com works but be sure you install the latest version and the correct for your system. x86 or x64. IT WILL FAIL on the older codecs.
    • Photos and the codecs all have reset and/or repair options. You can access them via advanced options in the control panel when you select them.
    • If needed you may need to uninstall them using PowerShell if the uninstall is greyed out.

These HVEC/HEIF file format are not going away I wish MS would get its act together and as usual they are not very forthcoming with information.

    Hope this helps
