You will no longer be able to redeem your free Minecraft Windows 10 code from Mojang. This had to be done by Monday 20th April 2020.

So I'm trying to redeem Minecraft for Windows 10 (I purchased the game back in 2011) and I keep getting this error upon hitting the redeem button:
Error! It looks like we've temporarily run out of gift codes for Minecraft for Windows 10. Don't worry though, more codes should be on their way. Please check back later!
Are there really no codes available right now or is this a error on my end somehow?

The redemption program would end on April 20, 2020 so make sure to get the code before.
If you purchased Minecraft Java Edition before October 18, 2018, you will see a button that says “Redeem” in your account.
· If the button is grayed out, you’ve already claimed the code. Log in to your Microsoft account to redownload the game.
· If you don’t have a Redeem button, you purchased Minecraft Java Edition after October 18, 2018 and are not eligible for this promotion.

I bought Minecraft in 2010. This makes no sense to me. It cannot be that hard for Microsoft to generate unique codes. They 'ran out'? We're talking about randomly generated codes that can be used as a one time access to purchase a game owned by a massive gaming tech company and they ran out like it's some kind of physical merchandise? What is this, the 20th century? Sorry, I'm not being very helpful. Just to note, it is still not working, but you probably knew that already.
Agreed, "running out" of codes makes no sense here. As a developer who has worked with Microsoft products the most likely thing that is going on is on the back end each time a code is requested they make an API call to Microsoft to issue a single code, then relay that code to you. Then they are later invoiced for these codes (hence not just pre-allocating them for all early purchasers, they are hoping most people don't redeem these codes). Likely there have been changes to certificates/authentication on the API or data structure changes and the API calls are failing.
In the beginning there was likely an initial allocation of codes to Mojang, which they placed into a pool of some kind then handed out as needed. Hence the error message being about running out of codes. There is almost no way that they are still maintaining a pool of codes, and if they are that's even more alarming. Probably the error message is just a catch-all and is simply indicating something else has come apart in the back end.
All of that said, Mojang / Microsoft in tandem have the very worst support I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with (or, on the part of Mojang, NOT interacting with). I'm so very disappointed with how this is handled and I really wish my kids didn't even like Minecraft at all so I could stop dealing with this problem.
Lol this is nuts. I just got a VR and wanted to try out minecraft. Have had the game since 2011 and cant justify purchasing it again as I wont see myself playing it as much if it all. Just wanted to give it a try.
