Disable auto enhance in Photos app

Hi,

I'm having some problems with the Photos app as it automatically enhances my RAW photos, which is kind of ridiculous without actually giving me the option to disable it or not. I've searched online and people suggest to simply disable ''Automatically enhance your photos'' in the settings under Viewing and editing, but I do not have that option, as you can see in the screenshot I've attached below. Is there a fix for this?

Edit: I might all add that once opening the RAW photos in the Photos app and after they are auto enhanced they also appear auto enhanced in other image viewing apps, which is completely ludicrous. Only app that displays the images correctly is QuickLook preview.

Hey guys,

I found this thing "Color Management" was causing the trouble with my system. Only my second screen had this issue, that it changed colours and whatnot in the program "Photos". This trouble only appeared in my computer after this time August 2021.
The other problem I have is the picture frames the program Photos puts in the place, that happens in both screens. I need to get rid from that, so can maximize pictures. I use hide taskbars to fully utilize screen sizes and that renders any extra frames pointless, I wish windows would always add "on/off" buttons for these new features.

Steps I took:

  1. Open "Settings"
  2. Open "System"
  3. Click "Display
  4. Scroll down and then click "Advanced display settings"
  5. Under "Choose display" select "Display 2: SyncMaster" (*or whatever you have trouble with)
  6. Click "Display adapter properties for Display 2"
  7. Change to tab "Color Management" then click "Color Management"
  8. Change "Device:" to "Display: 2 (SyncMaster 226CW)" (*)
  9. Check box "Use my settings for this device"
  10. Click "Add..."
  11. Choose from "ICC Profiles" -> sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (At least I had that listed there)
  12. Click "OK"
  13. Click "Set as Default Profile"
  14. You should now see pictures normally. (At least what I can observe, I suffer eye colour blindness)
  15. Close unnecessary windows.

My setup:
W10 x64
RTX 2080ti
i9-9900k
#1 Asus Rog Pg279q @2560x1440 165hz
#2 Samsung SyncMaster 226cw @1680x1050 60hz

    Please let us disable this--it's so frustrating! I'm not using it for professional photo editing, I just need to take screenshots for work sometimes and it's automatically whiting out text when I open the image files.

    Can't believe you can't turn this off...

    This is a MAJOR downfall. You just want things to be quick and easy right - it shouldn't be hard, import photos onto hard drive, double click thumbnail to large view, sort through, delete any unwanted files - THEN import keepers to other apps for editing / converting / storage etc.

    As it currently stands - you can't even sort through your files to select which to keep and which to bin - because auto enhance makes them ALL bin worthy... And people will say - "Just use another app"... SHOULDN'T HAVE TO - a basic photo viewer should be a base line feature of any system!!! Am I crazy or is this crazy???

    Hello Microsoft!!! Any resolution for this problem. We dont want windows to auto correct our pictures in windows photos app!!! You can make it as an option or expra button to click and do it if someone would like to do it but most of us dont and you are forcing us to use another non microsoft preview program. Also there is an issue with png files as they dont show full resolution of the picture from dji drones but this is for another topic.

    Hello there, I've been experiencing this issue too since I've updated my Windows 7 to Windows 10. I noticed I couldn't open a .CR2 (Canon RAW format) file with Windows Photo Viewer from a very recent DSLR model. Previously .CR2's from my personal 600D camera openend perfectly so the codec probably got renewed/changed along the way during this time span.

    Then I tested the Microsoft Photos app and this program was able to view this image, but it needed a couple of seconds to 'fully' load. About 1-2sec on my SSD and 2-3sec on my HDD. I also have the latest version so the auto-enhance option is not available to me to disable. I've been searching quite a lot how and why, but I couldn't find any reasonable explanation!

    But even worse... I also did notice like you that now the change ("enhancement") happens too with my other image viewing programs as well like Windows Photo Viewer which is indeed totally ludicrous :-O It is especially noticeable in dark imagery: it gets a over-saturated reddish hue and also triggers fringing in the regions with high contrast. I've added an example below from a lowest exposure image for a HDR.

    **So I ended up deleting this useless Photos app completely with Microsoft Powershell, then I reset all thumbnail cache with the Disk Cleanup feature. And ultimately I payed 10 bucks to installThe FastPictureViewer Codec Pack I had found on the internet. After a reboot everything is fixed and viewing images is now incredibly fast without any modification to the image itself.**I highly recommend everyone to do the same, this program really saves me lots of time and frustration! For real, any photographer knows this amount of money is nothing compared to other costs we have to enjoy our hobby/work.

    PS: to some other comments I've read in this thread, obviously we don't use the Microsoft Photos app to edit our RAW's. I do this in Adobe Lightroom but I also frequently do quick checks with the normal pre-installed Windows image viewer program, mostly before importing them into LR to see what's useful to keep and what I can delete right away to save processing power and again: valuable time.
