After using Windows for 35 years I finally am encountering a bad Windows update (auto installed by MS on Thursday night while I was asleep) that have rendered my PC non bootable & given me a black screen.

I know you can boot using a recovery USB stick but alas I haven't made a stick using my PC's image when it was still booting up & operating.

So now am researching how to create one & hopely not have to lose all my files (even though I hve it backed up to the clouds already).

OK, I have not purchased a PC in 30 years, this was the first time that I updated ANY software and my PC build would NOT got to POST.  After I got over my initial PANIC, I decided to try and reset the BIOS on my motherboard.  After unplugging and removing ALL cables from the PC, I took the cover off, located the two PINS for BIOS RESET, removed the motherboard battery, and shorted out the two PINS and reset the BIOS.  Every motherboard is different, use your motherboard manual to see exactly how to do this.  Once I put my PC back together and plugged it back in, IT WORKED AGAIN.  SO, Microsoft is screwing with the BIOS somehow and it KILLS the motherboard.  Try this option, EVERYTHING WAS THE WAY IT WAS BEFORE THE UPDATE.  Also, my Motherboard was a NEW ASUS X570 PLUS running a RYZEN 7 with NO overclocking.  Thank Microsoft for sending out KILLER UPDATES.  Good Luck - DM

Do you mean resetting the BIOS password?

Do you mean resetting the BIOS password?

No Sir, actual PINS on the Motherboard.  Every Motherboard has these pins, however, they can be anywhere on the motherboard.  They are two pins (for a connector) that never go to anything.  If you don't have a JUMPER you can hold a flat screwdriver (gently) so that both are touching the screwdriver, this will cause a SHORT and RESET the BIOS.  Your BIOS will go back to all factory default settings, and undo whatever it is that the Windows Updated did.  If you have a laptop, it harder to get to because of the case.  Every brand of motherboard that I have ever used has these two pins (located right next to each other) OR a reset switch.  I've attached a photo of the pins on a MSI 470+ Motherboard, they are located next to the PCI E4 slot, but they can be anywhere on the board depending on the manufacturer.  Get a manual for the Motherboard, it should tell you exactly where these two pins are located.  Some motherboards have an actual reset switch.  Once you reset the BIOS your PC should start, I know mine did!
