Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update.

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Thanks!

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

Hope this helps!

    Hi

I have a new problem that happened out of nowhere with my W10 start up, going from almost instant to an annoying  amount of time.

Hardware is top notch and have tried all the basics but I believe I need to run a windows boot log to identify the problem to resolve it but need professional advice. Please no "Toms Hardware" chancers just IT pros.

    Thanks

@Mhammer88 1903 is NOT like 1909, because there were feature upgrades, and why would MS call it 1909 if there weren't any differences, get your facts straight first of all, and think about what you just said second of all.  Are you a Technician, or an Software Developer?  Are you qualified to say such random things?  Having or not having an SSd has nothing to do with stuttering on the desktop and the mouse freezing for seconds at a time, which I have experienced with the 1909 update.  Even with a fresh install with 1909 installed already, I have had these Issues.   Anyways, what I did is reinstall windows 10 and updated to 1903, then turned off all updates except security updates, which when I can I download Manually.  This seems to have cured my 1909 experiences, for now until MS addresses these issues and has a hotfix or future feature update, I will NOT update my computer.  Sorry to hear that you are having problems @aa5wg  MS really screwed the pooch on that update, and it isn't across the board that it effects your computer.

Well good luck buddy, Tom's hardware are probably better than any help you'll get from a perfectly MS Homogenized Tech, for all intensive purposes... and anybody whom has knowledge of the actual updates within MS corp. are pretty insulated by Consumer relations/ support, so you may never get a direct answer from any of the lower-level techs, unless your complaint gets upgraded to an Dept. manager.  -Dave

I would'nt insult 'Toms Hardware' if I was you. We are all Toms Hardware, yourself included, otherwise we would'nt be on here. Have you not noticed the absense of any Microsoft specialist?

It would seem that the best answer is to get back to 1903 and turn off updates. Do manual security updates until MS fixes the problem or the 35 days is up.
