Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    Hi guys I just wanted to give an update since so many people have the same problem. I finally ordered an inexpensive Dell refurbished desktop with i5 and 8 GB RAM that performs as expected so far.  For the old PC, the performance became much better after I ran a Registry Cleaner, but the problem still returned after several days, then one day the first cleaner stuck with one registry and I tried another cleaner which worked again. I hope this information helps. 

    Hey Sony_2020, thanks for the tip on the Registry Cleaner.  Please share which product(s) you're using.  I've run CCleaner with minimal success.

    I have reset my PC and it is still extremely slow.

    The disk usage is always 100% and i have no idea how to solve it.

    I can confirm that if you install all the Windows updates, including the 1909 one which some people seem to think is the cause of the issue, that it fixes the issue.

    I think the issue was already present before 1909 and that update seems to fix it.

    We had machines on 1803, and those were also affected. After installing the Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1909, it immediately solved our problems.

    We ran through all the available updates today on a select few of our 50 machines and all those that we installed all available updates on, after the reboot they seemed back to normal.

    I did a clean install of Windows 10 1909 and added the updates which brought the version to 18363.657 and I still have the severe lag problem you are all speaking of.  I am running a AMD FX-8350 CPU, 16 GB DDR3 MEM, and a Samsung 500GB SSD.  When I was running Windows 10 1903 with the same CPU, MEM, and SSD I experienced little if any lag.  This has to be a problem with something that Microsoft messed up in the 1909 update.  This is not a hardware problem.

    Exactly same, 1903 is good, but 1909 has lag problem.
