Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    Dude the funny thing about it is if you do try to go back to 1903(Via windows backup) usually ends up breaking the OS in one way or another.  The whole Windows backup thing is still kind of a joke, they have been trying to make backup work since XP, and it has NEVER worked for me at all, Maybe Once, and that is it(not bad for 20years in the making?)...lol.  So a reinstall of your OS actually IS the best advice for Anyone whom has Updated to the MUCH REVERED 1909 update.  Blah blah, blah, and No Tom's Hardware isn't just Opinion(unless you are completely oblivious to tech-speak, and can't follow directions) Their forums have solved probably 100's of Hardware/software/OS problems that people of all walks (and hardware configurations) you can simply, follow, or ignore.  Dependant on your hardware/software configs, there is no opinion in an solved case, so people just do your research, and don't sit here waiting for MS to fix your problems, because, frankly they don't care unless they are selling an New OS to you every 3-5 years, and can spy unfettered on your browsing/buying habits to sell to corporations for profit or gain.  Sorry this feels like a rant to me, my bad, but ignorance is bliss, that is why MS is so Blissful.  :)

    1909 makes my bootup last about 20 minutes!!

    Uninstall 1909

    Install http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

    run wushowhide.diagcab and hide the 1909 update so that it no longer updates

    Unfortunately after a couple of months Mcrosoft release a new version and it installs with the same problem (I have just uninstalled my 3rd incarnation of this rubbish). I'm hoping that one of these updates will have fixed the issue, but so far no luck.

    Alternatively use Winupdate stop to stop all updates.

    I have identified  the Anti-Malware-Executable as being a Disc hog and is active even in an empty machine causing long delays in openeing just about any application. The date on that exe on my machine is 5/6/20.

    Any others got the same issue?

    This is exactly my point. I am not qualified which is why I don’t kid myself, and others, that I know what I’m talking about. The posts on Toms Hardware are merely opinions, and should not be taken seriously. I’ve already had 3 responses from them all saying to reinstall windows as the first step! Says it all really.
