Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    Hello

    Another weakness in windows.  I ALWAYS created a restore point before any update.  Interestingly, when I tried to go back to my previous set up, the system tells me I do not have any restore point.

    So now I cannot even undo the update.

    Sad

    The latest Windows updates have literally made my Dell Optiplex 5040 (16 gb RAM) unusable. God knows, why Microsoft comes up with such idiotic updates! A ton of updates followed by another set of useless updates are more to cripple the system rather than adding anything new. Wake up, Microsoft and all its stupid engineers; you are killing your product.  You are forcing me to hate Windows day after day.

    It transpired that my problem was caused by the recent addition of a 5th hard drive which was having a negative impact on start up. I set the system up to run with two M.2's and two SSD's and start up times are now back below ten seconds, which is acceptable.
