Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    I have uninstalled the update. Also I think there is something wrong with last amd drivers.

    We have experienced a little slowness on a few systems after 1909 upgrade.

    I wouldn't say they were extremely slow. The slowness really seemed to have the greatest effect on MS Teams, which was opening very slowly after a reboot and lots of delays while typing and switching in between different chats. Also switching between programs in general.

    We tried a few different things and while not definitive, it looks like that latest monthly cumulative update seems to help a lot. This one that just came out a couple of days ago2020-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4532693)

    After that if you check WinVer, you should see your build number update to 18363.657

    Before we found and tried that another thing we tried was updating BIOS and other system drivers and that seemed to help a little also. The 2 most effected systems had not had any for a while. Because they were both Dells it was easy enough to do that with Dell Command.

    Maybe that will help someone else here

    We understand your concern, as the PC became slow after the PC upgraded to Windows 10 1909. We appreciate your effort in providing us the detailed information on the issue.

    Meanwhile, put the PC in Clean Boot and see if you still have the performance issue. Refer the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows. A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. If the lag in performance does not reoccur in Clean Boot then please refer the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean bootto determine the root cause of the issue.

    Note: After you finish troubleshooting, follow the sectionReset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting to reset the computer to start normally.

    Thanks for your detailed information. I tried block some programs at the Startup tag of Task Manager but it didn't help. I think the problem was "memory leak" caused by recent update. I will try a Clean Boot to further diagnose the problem.

    If you already done some updates and pc slowed down,then you need to delete most of the .net framework updates.

    Since there's something wrong with your Windows 10 after an update. Another good option is to uninstall Windows 10 update and go back to the previous version. 

    If you're having problems with your PC, there are recovery options to use as well.

    I have been using "System Restore" to go back to previous version/setting when it slowed down. I will try uninstall the update if it happens again to see if it helps. Thanks!
