Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    hi there:

    1903 is like 1909. So, 1909 didn't cause your issue. I have been using 1909 since it came out and found no issues like yours. Did you have SSD for your device? If not, that is one reason why your Windows 10 is slow. You can install SSD and try it out. Maybe the processor is causing the issue too. Slow processor.

    I think there are enough users reporting a difference in speed between 1903 and 1909 for there to be a problem with 1909.

    I also think that Sony_2020's explanation that on reverting back to 1903 solves the speed problem is further proof that 1909 is the problem.

    I further think that if Microsoft expects users to upgrade their PC's every time they issue an update, and on top of that have to spend precious time debugging an update, then it is indeed time to move to Linux.

    I run on 64-bit Core i5 at 2.5 GHz with 160GB ram and if that is not enough then Linux is the only solution.

    It is obvious from the number of reports that there are major problems going from 1903 to 1909.

    My Dell Inspiron running 64-bit Core i5 at 1.8 GHz with 8 GB ram became unusable. It seems the suggested solution is for all the users to do the debugging to discover where the problem exists.

    Horrible quality control and testing on Microsofts part.  I will stay with 1903 until those losers in Redmond produce a decent product.    ...or may Ubuntu Linux is a better answer

    This is still an issue even after the KB4532693 update. My pc ran buttery smooth prior to this so it has to be 1909. I have even did a fresh install and still has the same issues. Everything is slow. Start menu takes almost 30 seconds at times to even open... Keep in mind this is a fresh install with all the latest updates. Whoever said 1903 and 1909 are the same are full of it. Now since I did a fresh install I cannot roll back to 1903 which sucks. My god Microsoft can we have a update where it doesn't break half the operating system? How is it Linux can do an update and run smooth but a multi billion dollar company can't even do a single update without something breaking? Hire back your testing crew that you fired because everything seems to have gone to **** since you got rid of them.

    I agree.  My PC was slow but I did not attribute it too the update as I was travelling.  Bought a new PC.  Now that I am home and had some time I realize it indicated it "migrated" the hard drive C during the update.  My hard drive is at 100% busy most of the time now and file transfers take forever.  What a disaster.

    Before realizing this was the problem I decided to get rid of a bunch of stuff to see if that helped, including windows.old!!!!!!!  because it couldn't be an update could it?!!!!  Now what do I do/

    Dell laptop Intel I3 processor. slower than the first pc I had 30+ years ago.  :(
