Microsoft Family - Child can remove themselves from the family

I am outraged to find out I am trapped in the same problem. I spent couple of my precious days to figure out how to play with family settings with Microsoft account and got my 13 years old son to be added into my family.

The screen time limit etc just worked for 2 weeks before he found out this notorious "opt out" button in his account last night. I did get an email notification showing your son left your family but how come! It is a such bad design and useless feature that Microsoft has been bragging about that your kid can just simply get the escape with 1 click without the consent from the family organizer, parents. The most absurd thing is that It didn't cost me more than 1 minute to google out these many threads complaining the loophole discussed by so many pissed off parents for quite a number of years since 2015! What a shame to Microsoft 's PM, Dev, and QA on this. Think about I even need to ask my child to agree to accept my invite of joining him into the family, then what 's the heck that I was not even being asked to agree when he want to leave? 

This ridiculous 13 years line reminds me of another anti-human policy that you don't have access to your children's online medical account even for the purpose of making appointment or paying statements within for the stupid reasons. If this is the case, why not directly bill them instead of always sending bills to parents!? I need to think of moving to PS or Nintendo systems if they have better parental control.

My 13 year old child had their Screen Time reduced and Content Filter reduced as a consequence of not completing their school work on time .

So they left my Microsoft Family.

I'd love to show you how their account was configured but now that they're gone… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Microsoft Family and it's restrictions were a great strategy that got results when the child didn't put their strategy in place in a timely manner.

Didn't realise how effortlessly restrictions can be circumvented, till now.

This is not a glitch. This is a purposeful design by Microsoft to give people a false sense of security and control. Microsoft’s Family center is without question the WORST family safety/monitoring tool out there. Google being the second worst. By design MS and Google believe that parents don’t have the right to monitor their minor kids or restrict the content that their minor children see.

None of these child safety/monitoring tools are perfect, but the best I’ve seen in a platform is Apple’s as it’s pretty easy to configure and just works.

As for Microsoft, my advice is... choose another platform as anything is better. The Microsoft one is nothing short of useless.

That’s not true. Other companies handle this properly. This is just a short sighted interpretation of the law in order to get more marketing dollars from their partners. Allowing to properly monitor and restrict helps the parent/guardian to be able to do their job of protecting their children and does not introduce risk to Microsoft. Allowing kids to bypass their parent/guardian restrictions puts the child at risk, the parent at risk due to the false sense of security that the parent has protected the child, but it reduces MS ad dollars . I hope you now understand where MS’s priorities are focused. In short, choose another platform.
