sfc and DISM both fail, windows 10 version 1803

Hi,

I'm running a Lenovo G510, originally delivered with Windows 8, but upgraded to 10 about 2 years ago. A failed update uncovered the fact that there may be a problem with the current installation of 1803. sfc /scannow fails with the message "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation". DISM fails with "the WOF driver encountered a corruption in the compressed file’s resource table". CHKDSK appears to complete successfully.

    Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

    I recommend an in-place upgrade repair.

    To repair Windows without losing any data then follow the instruction here:

    This will also upgrade you to the latest version of Windows - currently 1903 - if you currently don’t have this installed.

    In a nutshell you just download the media creation tool & choose to upgrade now.

    Please note a repair install is not a reset, this is a last attempt at repairing a PC without a clean install. If this fails to repair the problem then usually a clean install is required.

    Hi,

    Sorry it took a while to get back to you.

    The problem originally appeared when trying to update to windows 10 ver 1903. No matter what process was used - media creation tool, Windows Update assistant, or setting/update - the process failed. While trying to solve that, I discovered the problems with sfc & DISM.

    A cumulative update to v1803 did complete in the middle of all this, so it looks like Update itself works. Just need to figure out what keeps sfc from completing.

    Have you tried updating offline using the .iso?

    Download the .iso, disconnect from the internet & disable any third party software, mount the .iso & run setup.

    Did you try the in-place repair?

    What was the failure error? Seems strange that SFC/DISM failed during the update.

    You may have to run DISM using install media:

    You can copy and paste the command below in an admin command prompt and it will put a text file on your Desktop.  If you look near the bottom, it may show some files which cannot be repaired. 

    IF you want to work on the upgrade situation, go to the site below and run the setupdiag utility. 

    It needs the log files from the attempted upgrade, so don't mess with them.

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

    The listing may provide info as to why the upgrade fail but it also creates a folder with some files, which you can use or make some available in your OneDrive or other hosting site, if you want.
