keep getting this message on windows update even after clicking retry several times,

    I faced the same problem. 

    The only way to solve it was EXITING the "S" mode of the OS. Here's how:

    There is no other way that I found of.

    I have the same issue. 

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - December 2019 (KB890830) -Error 0x800711c7

    This is on a brand new surface go 8gb ram running on Windows 10 S

    Its ridiculous that its January and it still isn't fixed

    Just ignore it CoolBreezeTG6, it's a spurious error due to the fact that the Malicious Software Removal Tool currently has no purpose running on a Windows system running in S mode.

    Unlike others, I don't believe this will ever be fixed, at least not until Microsoft either needs to provide a working version of the MSRT because a malicious actor found a way around S mode or more likely a major Windows update removes MSRT from such systems permanently.

    Of course this is frustrating for non-technical users, but letting it get to you is your own fault.  Once I realized MSRT wasn't required with S mode, I just stopped worrying about this message entirely, it's really that simple.

    Of course this is frustrating for non-technical users, but letting it get to you is your own fault.  Once I realized MSRT wasn't required with S mode, I just stopped worrying about this message entirely, it's really that simple.

    I find this response a little... off the mark. You may have stopped worrying and people on this thread by definition are technically aware. But the vast majority of S mode users are just presented with an error message with no way out. My wife keeps asking me about its appearance on her Go. I worked in the industry for 44 years and have no way of explaining MSRT and its interaction (or lack of) with S mode to her.

    As representing the actual target audience of S mode, I think we're right to keep up the pressure and describe the impact of a non-actionable error.
