I have this issue also. Its so annoying!
File Explorer search not working in Windows 10 1909
Ever since I updated to Windows 10 1909 the Search Box in the File Explorer is completely unuseable. It shows a text cursor but I cannot click inside the box or type any text into it. Essentially it's a text box with no "wiring".
Any ideas how to resolve this issue? I'm having to resort to using a third-party search app just to find files in my projects.
Kind regards
Byron

2020-01-25T19:25:22+00:00 My father had this issue, could not click on the search box, and it resolved when I changed the display options for the desktop and colors for windows/file explorer, and has not recurred. Changed default windows mode to dark, default app mode to light, and set a custom accent color. Don't understand how they could be related, but the search started working again and it stayed fixed after a reboot.
I did this from settings, personalization, colors, but I don't see how you can change default app mode settings, or the specific colors for explorer. It's probably something simple I'm missing. How did you do that?

2020-01-25T17:33:02+00:00 Thank you, Ozberg. Yes indeed, Listary includes my beloved search by kind option. Problem solved.
It's just unfortunate that we have to resort to a third-party application to recover functionality that Microsoft loses in the quality control and usability testing process.
Thanks once again.

2020-01-25T16:52:31+00:00 I have had the same problem since installing a clean copy of Windows and upgrading. My search box in windows explorer only works occasionally. I have tried changing resolution, turning off things like onedrive and google file stream, but the issue is still there. Microsoft, please fix it.
In addition, for those who are still suffering, I have a free workaround for you. I found this app. https://www.listary.com/. It actually is so much faster than regular windows search. Below is an example of how it works. Just start typing and it will pop up..
