Local network problems with 1903

I have updated 3 of my 4 computers to 1903, now none of them can see each other in the explorer network section, but each of them can see the NAS drive on the network. I have checked the network sharing settings and they are all set as make this computer discoverable. Oddly the JRiver media centre servers show up in windows explorer, but the computers which they are on do not appear. Any suggestions?

I think I may have finally resolved the issue.  Took some time, but finally have positive results... Let's see if this works for y'all.

First:  Make sure you have the correct services running.  Right click the start menu, click run and type in "services.msc"  Make sure all of the following services are set on automatic (delay start).  Note, if your system is fast enough, you may not have to put it on delay start.  I only did that not to bog down the boot time.

     DHCP Client

     Function Discovery Provider Host

     Function Discovery Resource Publication

     SSDP Discovery

     UPnP Device Host

Second: Make sure you have the correct Windows components running.  Open settings, click on Apps, and then in the upper right hand corner, you will find Programs and Features.  Now, on the upper left hand side of this new window, you will see Turn Windows Features On or Off, click that.  Make sure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and SMB Direct are both fully checked (not the black box, but a check mark.)  I also have Work Folders Client checked, but not sure if that will affect it.

Third:  Make sure you have Enable Remote Desktop enabled... even if you do not plan on accessing your computer remotely.  Always remember, if you don't have a password on your account, you can't access the computer remotely anyway.  This is found under Settings, then System, and finally the last choice on the bottom left.

Fourth and Final Step:  Make sure you are on a private network.  Click on the network icon on the toolbar, and select Network and Internet Settings.  If under your connection device, it says public, click on either the Ethernet or WiFi link, and change it to Private.

Now, reboot the computer, and see if this works. 

I have been trying to find a solution to this since May.  Please let me know if this helps.  If not, I will keep trying.  Someone has to work the bugs out.

    BTW, This is what I would recommend for your particular problem.  I always try to use a dual hard drive system, and employ MKLinks.  I first install the Operating System on the main drive, but all of my User files are located on the secondary drive.  This works better in two ways:

    1.  In case of a hard drive failure, all of your personal data is still safe.  As the OS drive is used continuously, it's lifespan is greatly reduced... but your data drive will hardly spin at all, and could easily last 20 years.

    2.  In cases like yours, where you have to reinstall, it saves a ton of time.  You just install regularly, and then have a small batch file to create the symbolic links.  Instantly, all of your data, program settings and browser history is right back as you left it.

    I actually don't have a blog yet, per say... but I am working on getting a YouTube channel going.

    Oh, and one last thing, I just found out tonight that MS has actually quietly changed their 1903 build.  They added about 200 mb of data to the new image.  I found this out as I was trying to make some adjustments to my image.  so, if you use the Media Creation Tool now, it will be a different 1903 than the one released at the end of May.

    Hi

    Thanks for the help with Microsoft's 1903 update which not only killed my Network but also deleted record of my Microsoft account login info, although they brought one up with an email as the user that I have not had for years (at formerly hotmail.com, as well as my LastPass Password security program - which they also DELETED! removing the app and all from my computer! It required a new install, and luckily I was able to log into it with my secure password to re-initialize my saved pages, passwords etc.

    I can't believe that they screwed up a release so badly that with your knowledge it took you so long to find and fix, let alone, that they are still releasing the erroneous version to the general public..  I happen to know a bit more than your average Joe and had spent time already; but, this level of interference and blatant coding issues should never have made public release!!

    I would, if you have one, very much like to have a link to "your solutions/a blog you run/or any other way to get a hold of you (email?), as I only stumbled on your solution at answers.microsoft.com by chance, and clearly you are way ahead of them.

    I also noticed the number of responses, detailed ones at that, you offered to others on this site alone - and KUDOS to you for doing that!

    I usually do not handle Domain Servers, but this is what I know, for now.

    The way Windows 7 and Windows 10 handle Network Configurations is completely different.  In fact, unless you are a homegroup user, which I never recommend because it allows FULL access to your files, it is hard for the two OSes to communicate.

    That being said, I am still looking into a more permanent solution for everyone.  All feedback helps.  I will do some more investigating.  When I find an answer, I will be sure to post it.  But most certainly, keep the feedback coming in... each situation is different.

    One question, did you do a clean install of Win 10, or just let it do the update?  If you let it do the update, it may still have residual settings left over from 7 in the registry.

    1. I have all of those services running and set to start automatically. I don't remember which were set for delayed but they are all running.
    2. I have all of the SMB features checked in Windows features.
    3. I have remote desktop enabled.
    4. I am on a Domain network. I can't change that to private.

    Some other things about my computer that are set the same way as I had them on Windows 7 when I could see the full list of computers and servers under Network:

    1. I use auto login. My settings are saved in the registry so that my computer will always log itself back in. This was set this way for working remotely.
    2. Our connection to the internet does not go through our server. All computers have two network adapters: one connects to the main network and the other connects to the internet. Both use static IP addresses. When I look in Settings - Network and Internet
    • Ethernet - Network.info (sample network name) - under IP settings it shows IP assignment: Automatic (DHCP). The properties show the static IP information that I entered in Network and Sharing center. If I try to edit and add that same information where it says Automatic (DHCP) it won't let me because we don't have a Gateway for the server. There is a Gateway (our firewall IP address) to get to the internet, but not the main network. I was able to set those settings in computers before but can't in this one. 

    But as I said above these are the same settings I had in Win 7 and had no issue seeing the network under Network. Funny thing is that since I set up this new computer and moved my Win 7 to my side desk I can no longer see the network on that one either. So this is why i am thinking maybe it is a rights issue or maybe there was an update to the server software that is causing this to happen.

    I wish your solutions would have worked for me but they were the same ones that I've read over and over again on various sites. Please don't give up on us though. We still need a solution. I will also keep trying.
