Host Process For Windows Taskhostw.exe Stopped Working: Event ID 1000

Anonymous
2019-06-18T23:33:45+00:00

I noticed upon checking my Event Log Applications and my Reliability Monitor I have been getting this critical error about every 2 to 3 days now on my HP Omen i7 -16 GB Mem - Nvidia GEForce GTX 1070 on Win10 Home 64 bit and this did not start happening until I updated to v1903 on May 30^th^ . My build is 18362.239. Could someone please advise me as how to resolve this or MS deploy a fix for this. It appears I am not the only one getting these. I have reported this through the Feedback Hub. I have run all three DISMs, SFC, Malwarebytes, Norton and I turned on Windows  Defender long enough for a quick scan and no problems seen. It appears this is a scheduled task that keeps failing instead of running to completion.

    Hi, Camilla,

I'm going to take a punt here and assume that the actions I took will resolve our problem. Probably won't do but I will get the procedure together and post in a little while.

Meanwhile, would anyone experiencing the original problem please run the "sfc /scannow" and see if you get the same problem?

    I'll post the solution asap.

Hello Daknut - Apologies for butting in, but I also can confirm I'm getting these Defender-related file corruption reports in CBS.log when running sfc /scannow. I'm getting this on all of five devices, all running 1903 fully updated, and am also seeing the taskhostw/unbcl errors but only on two of these machines. So I doubt the issues are directly related. I "corrected" the alleged corruption on one machine by running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, which reported the store as repairable and repaired it, after which sfc managed to restore everything to its satisfaction. But whether this "correction" is a good idea is another matter, as I subsequently found that on the "corrected" machine, only, Defender offline scan will not run (reboots correctly but crashes on the preparatory progress bar before the scan itself starts). I've not checked whether the "correction" breaks the offline scan on other machines. On the "corrected" machine, I still get the taskhostw errors.

Though it may well be totally unrelated, I'm also noticing on the two machines affected by the taskhostw errors that Windows Store is from time to time showing large numbers of apps as having available updates when they are in fact fully updated (running the updates apparently reinstalls them, and removes the spurious notification at least for a while, but they then show with their original update dates, often months earlier).

This is getting to be a pretty murky situation, not helped in my case by finding that Feedback Hub is not working reliably enough to report any of this with confidence... but I'd better not take up more space on this thread elaborating on that issue!

    POSSIBLE SOLUTION

I saw a possible association/similar problem that people were experiencing with Windows Defender following the 1903 update and checked my system once more. This time, it came up with an error where it hadn't before and , as it was Defender-related, it's either some ghastly coincidence or it'll work. It seems to be worth a go.

    .oOo.

    1. In the Search Window, type 'Powershell' until you get 'Windows Powershell'. Then right click on 'Windows Powershell' and left click on 'Run as Administrator'. When you get the command line, paste in or type the command (pay attention to the space):

    sfc /scannow

The system is scanned. Once it completes, the new error we got was that there were problems that could not be resolved. It gives you a Windows path to a log (CBS.log) where it's been recorded. Go there and open the log file. At the very bottom of the text and scrolling up, you should see numerous errors relating to Windows Defender, stating that the back up image was also corrupt and could not over-write the problem files.

If that's the problem, then proceed with the following.

    1. In the Serach Window, type 'Command Prompt' until you get 'Command Prompt'. Then right click on 'Command Prompt' and left click on 'Run as Administrator'. When you get the command line, paste in or type the command (again, pay attention to the spaces):

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

This is telling the computer to use the online resources to clean up the system image that Powershell has just tried to use.

It take a few seconds for the percentage counter to begin. When it ends at 100%, WAIT. It looks like it's frozen but it will take a few minutes before it tells you that the process has been completed and a new command prompt appears (like it was in the beginning).

    Close the window

    1. WAIT a few minutes (some posters stated that they had to wait before the next would work. I have no idea why).
    2. Now repeat point 1, EXCEPT that, at the end of the process, you should get a statement that the files were repaired/over-written.
    3. Run scannow (point 1) once more and, this time, there should be nothing found.
    4. If one of these points doesn't work, I'd go back and repeat that particular point and don't go on to the next one).

    .oOo.

This seems a strange way to resolve our original problem but it will resolve the corrupt Windows Defender files and program. Only 5 days of no errors in Reliability Monitor with "Host Process For Windows Tasks" will test whether this really works.

    Ah!

The solution may not work then! Thanks for posting quickly after mine.

It should resolve the problems with Defender, though.

    Hello again Daknut!

    Ran all these:

    •- DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    •- DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    •- DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    •- sfc /scannow

Seems to have at least solved the Defender problem so thanks for that :-). Find it peculiar though since I ran them all 3 June and everything came back clean that day. But! I'm far from an expert in this field so I too rely on those with more expertise.

You state there is a new feature in Defender. Looks the same to me though so can you specify what new feature is there?
