Host Process For Windows Taskhostw.exe Stopped Working: Event ID 1000

Anonymous
2019-06-18T23:33:45+00:00

I noticed upon checking my Event Log Applications and my Reliability Monitor I have been getting this critical error about every 2 to 3 days now on my HP Omen i7 -16 GB Mem - Nvidia GEForce GTX 1070 on Win10 Home 64 bit and this did not start happening until I updated to v1903 on May 30^th^ . My build is 18362.239. Could someone please advise me as how to resolve this or MS deploy a fix for this. It appears I am not the only one getting these. I have reported this through the Feedback Hub. I have run all three DISMs, SFC, Malwarebytes, Norton and I turned on Windows  Defender long enough for a quick scan and no problems seen. It appears this is a scheduled task that keeps failing instead of running to completion.

Hello Daknut - Apologies for butting in, but I also can confirm I'm getting these Defender-related file corruption reports in CBS.log when running sfc /scannow. I'm getting this on all of five devices, all running 1903 fully updated, and am also seeing the taskhostw/unbcl errors but only on two of these machines. So I doubt the issues are directly related. I "corrected" the alleged corruption on one machine by running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, which reported the store as repairable and repaired it, after which sfc managed to restore everything to its satisfaction. But whether this "correction" is a good idea is another matter, as I subsequently found that on the "corrected" machine, only, Defender offline scan will not run (reboots correctly but crashes on the preparatory progress bar before the scan itself starts). I've not checked whether the "correction" breaks the offline scan on other machines. On the "corrected" machine, I still get the taskhostw errors.

Though it may well be totally unrelated, I'm also noticing on the two machines affected by the taskhostw errors that Windows Store is from time to time showing large numbers of apps as having available updates when they are in fact fully updated (running the updates apparently reinstalls them, and removes the spurious notification at least for a while, but they then show with their original update dates, often months earlier).

This is getting to be a pretty murky situation, not helped in my case by finding that Feedback Hub is not working reliably enough to report any of this with confidence... but I'd better not take up more space on this thread elaborating on that issue!

    Hi, Camilla,

I'm going to take a punt here and assume that the actions I took will resolve our problem. Probably won't do but I will get the procedure together and post in a little while.

Meanwhile, would anyone experiencing the original problem please run the "sfc /scannow" and see if you get the same problem?

    I'll post the solution asap.

Hi, I just ran sfc /scannow again and this is what I get: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. For online repairs details are included in the CBS log file located at windir.... now how to I fix those files???

    Hi, Don,

Would you do me a favour and try something for me? I have already run the "sfc /scannow" in Powershell with Administrator Rights but decided to do it again - I was thinking about the new feature in the Security Centre that came with 1903 that didn't install by default and both my wife and I had some strange stuff happen with it.

Today, when I ran "sfc /scannow", I got errors that could not be resolved because the image library was corrupt. In the CBS.Log (location at the end of the Powershell text), all the predominant errors were Windows Defender based.

Both my wife and I both got this problem cos I've just run sfc /scannow on hers with identical results.

As you're having the same errors, would you see if you get what I've just got?

I've resolved the issues but am curious in case this is a consequence of what we're all experiencing.

    Thanks

    Lee

ok here are the dates I have had this error:

There was one thing that I did notice in my experience of this error. People are talking about the NET update as being possibly responsible.

    On 15.6, KB4495620 was installed.

On 26.6, I got the first error.

I waited to see if it would resolve itself but it didn't. Then, I *think* what happened next was that I wondered if there was a problem with Windows Updates (because of the nature of the error and because it's happened before) and I noticed that the NET update KB4502584 was showing a yellow triangle, unable to be installed, in the Windows Update Settings.

I clicked on 'Update' and it worked. That was on 3.7. But there was no critical error on that day.

A similar thing happened with the wife's computer (or did it only happen with one? I am old so I get confused :) ).

There may be no relevance - no 'cause and effect' - but I thought that would resolve the problem, that the error was due to a failed update being 'stuck'. But it wasn't.
