Host Process For Windows Taskhostw.exe Stopped Working: Event ID 1000

Anonymous
2019-06-18T23:33:45+00:00

I noticed upon checking my Event Log Applications and my Reliability Monitor I have been getting this critical error about every 2 to 3 days now on my HP Omen i7 -16 GB Mem - Nvidia GEForce GTX 1070 on Win10 Home 64 bit and this did not start happening until I updated to v1903 on May 30^th^ . My build is 18362.239. Could someone please advise me as how to resolve this or MS deploy a fix for this. It appears I am not the only one getting these. I have reported this through the Feedback Hub. I have run all three DISMs, SFC, Malwarebytes, Norton and I turned on Windows  Defender long enough for a quick scan and no problems seen. It appears this is a scheduled task that keeps failing instead of running to completion.

This might help, or just muddy the waters!

Setupcleanuptask is a scheduled task that runs every 5 days, or (I think) whenever Automatic Maintenance runs.  Automatic maintenance runs as per the schedule in Control panel, Security and Maintenance.  That's the 'old' control panel.  If you run taskschd.msc (Win key + X then r then type in taskschd.msc)  expand task scheduler library, expand Microsoft,  expand Windows then scroll down to Setup.  There u will find Setupcleanuptask..  On my system it is configured to run every 5 days.  In the description it says  Deletes previous Windows installation files a few days after installation.  In the 'Actions' it says 'Custom Handler' so exactly what runs I don't know.

To me that means after a Windows feature update (say from 1809 to 1903) that creates a Windows.old as a backout it will delete Windows.old after a few days.  Up until today everytime the task ran the Last run result was 0xC0000005 and Taskhostw failed with the same error (0xC0000005).  I took that to mean the 2 events were connected.  One caused the other.

I had 'cleaned' my Defender corruptions with DISM and SFC as has been described elsewhere.  There were no DISM or SFC errors before I went to 1903 nor afterwards.  I saw the DISM and SFC errors before I updated to 1903 build 239 on July 10th,  corrected them, then updated without any (apparent) problem.  I was having taskhostw errors before the upgrade to 239 and the .Net update (KB4506991).  They both happened together on July 10th.

NOW …. today at 1341 Setupcleanuptask ran and completed with a last run result of 0x0.  There was no associated taskhostw error.  The task ran because Automatic maintenance ran it I think, although Automatic maintenance's run time is shown as 1 hour later - perhaps just a misinterpretation of time zones and daylight saving.  The task was not scheduled to run again according to taskschd.msc until July 22nd.  And taskschd.msc says it is still scheduled for July 22nd. I did nothing, as far as I am aware to cause it to run.  I have changed nothing (apart from Windows Defender Definition updates) as far as I am aware.  There is an almost empty Windows.old still on my harddrive.

    Hello my friend,

I checked my task manager like you instructed and I found no Setup under Windows so therefore no Setupcleanuptask. I have run Disk Cleanup after the 10 days expired after installing 1903 and it cleaned out my Win.old folder.

about the laptop you set up yesterday: are you not forgetting that no one had that Host error until 10-13 days after update/installation of 1903?

And, just to add one thing - the ESENT error occurred within 12 hours prior to the first Host error being received on all the computers I know...

...no doubt someone will not have that error and prove the consistency wrong :).

But are you not forgetting that no one had the Windows error til the same time had passed, too :) :) ? A fair few of us had run scannow and got back zero problems.

Yet, the Windows error happened immediately after the upgrade, yesterday.

Honestly, Camilla, I don't think there's much logic to this problem - so why did I use logic :) ?!!!!

    I think we're all baffled.

I checked my Setupcleanuptask as you directed me and I have no crash notification there. I also don't have any crash notification in EventID for the most recent one (today) or the one 5 days ago (which would be within the period of the Host errors - if they've stopped).

There have been a fair few people who have talked about deleting the old installation files as being the solution - but I don't see why that should be so as they're dormant and are just taking up disk space.

Unless the .dll has information in it that needs accessing for the program to complete the task.

I'm clutching at straws here - I think that, if we ever do find a solution, we probably won't know what it is :) !!!
