Win 10 1903 May 29, 2019—KB4497935 (OS Build 18362.145) still fails the update from a USB stick.

According to the description of the fixes in KB4497935 the bug with the USB devices should have been fixed, but it still does not allow updates with installation media on a USB stick.

Fix description:

"Addresses an issue that may cause an external USB device or SD memory card to be reassigned to an incorrect drive during installation. For more information, see "This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10" error on a computer that has a USB device or SD card attached"

I tried to do an update with installation media build 18362.145 on a system already at 18362.145 and still gets the error message below:

 

Is there a fix yet for this bug in the v 1903 release ? Which build do I need to get this bug fixed ?

I know that I can work around the issue installing from a local drive.

Also if I try upgrading from1903 to a preview 20H1 build 18908.1000 using a USB stick the update completes without this message.

I hope we don't need to wait for 20H1 to get this bug resolved.

    Sorry. It was two tries. The first kept the USB in all the way.

    I don't have two internal HDD's. I'd have to run the .iso from the only one I've got, or from an external USB HDD. Hopefully the external HDD wouldn't suffer the same fate as an external flash/thumb drive.

    I do not leave any USB drive plugged in all the time. But I do have this...

    It only shows up when "show hidden devices" is selected. It hasn't showed up normally since I left Win 8.1 for the original Win 10. It's got a socket on the right side of this Dell Inspiron 3542, but I never plugged anything into it. So I don't miss it.

    I wish Setup.exe would actually name the particular USB drive that makes it disagreeable.

    I think you can put the window.iso in a folder on your C: drive, I assume you have enough space.

    As for the USB card reader if there is no card inserted it may still pass the check.

    I've got tons of free space on my internal 1 TB HDD, only about 40 GB is used. Thanks for the vote of confidence on the card reader. I downloaded & printed my Owner's Manual, but would hate to open this computer up.

    Install get past that USB device checking, but then there was some another problems.

    Install run OK and restart at the end of that phase continuing with working on updates until first restart at 30% occurred and then it restore to previous version.

    Now I'm restoring dual boot image with 2x17763 to SSD and continue testing with faster disk. HDD goes back to backup disk.

    Probably it didn't like mixing stuff from 1809 and 1903 on the installation media, but for sure the trap for the USB must be in the installer, which needs to be fixed in a new ISO update for 1903.
