Win 10 1903 May 29, 2019—KB4497935 (OS Build 18362.145) still fails the update from a USB stick.

According to the description of the fixes in KB4497935 the bug with the USB devices should have been fixed, but it still does not allow updates with installation media on a USB stick.

Fix description:

"Addresses an issue that may cause an external USB device or SD memory card to be reassigned to an incorrect drive during installation. For more information, see "This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10" error on a computer that has a USB device or SD card attached"

I tried to do an update with installation media build 18362.145 on a system already at 18362.145 and still gets the error message below:

 

Is there a fix yet for this bug in the v 1903 release ? Which build do I need to get this bug fixed ?

I know that I can work around the issue installing from a local drive.

Also if I try upgrading from1903 to a preview 20H1 build 18908.1000 using a USB stick the update completes without this message.

I hope we don't need to wait for 20H1 to get this bug resolved.

    That's a good question, but I have never though about that issue.

    If MS want to show external storages (USB, SD) together with Network environment same level of that navigation panel then those shouldn't be under "This PC".

    OR: If MS want show all directly connected devices under "This PC" then it isn't needed that higher level.

    Only registry change I do after clean install is to set Windows read and handle data from Real Time Clock as UTC instead of local time and this settings remain over updates.

    Could you take a look at this question in the link below and give your comments, I did not get any answer yet.

    I also posted the same in the feedback for current release and latest insider build 18941.

    It seems that people have been complaining about this issue for a long time, but there was never an official fix or a clear explanation behind the drive duplicate in file explorer, MS is ignoring the feedback and complaints.

    There is also an alternative workaround in online threads beside the one described in my question.

    Adding the entry below in the registry seems to do the trick too.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum

     .Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value named {F5FB2C77-0E2F-4A16-A381-3E560C68BC83}

     .Set the data for {F5FB2C77-0E2F-4A16-A381-3E560C68BC83} to 1

    I don't understand why MS is ignoring this annoying issue, also every update gets rid of the temporary workaround (either one) restoring the registry to the original bug.

    The duplicate happens not just for USB drives, also in some cases for drives connected with eSATA,

    (IE:  WD MyBook).

    Thanks for the tips. I have unlimited NET access, so it doesn't cost to download the files twice to make an .ISO & a USB. But I have learned MCT downloads them to one of those tilde (~) folders, then copies them from there to the USB (instead of going direct). Too bad, but still I prefer MCT to winging it on my own.

    So - how did you find out 175 was available? It isn't stated at the "Download Windows 10" site or anywhere I can spot.

    You may have unlimited download, but it is still a waste to download multiple times.

    I just tried to download and saw that it was new.

    I suggested to MS to put a note on the download page advertising the level that is available, but so far they have ignored the suggestion.

    It is really silly that to find out you have to download and check...
