Windows 10 wifi slows down until reboot

Hello

i have noticed a problem with my Lenovo Legion laptop

After a while the internet connection completely slows down to the point it is pretty unusable, however a simple reboot fixes he issue until of course it slows again over time.

i've tried lots of things to rectify that i have seen online, but nothing has resolved the issue. i have all the latest window updates and network driver updates as far as i can tell. i've disable my AV and tested and that makes no difference.

Can someone help please?

I found a very possible solution.

Go to settings - > network -> status -> change adapter options

select your wifi adapter.  right click and select "properties"

select the first "configure" button

go to the "advanced" tab.  select "preferred band" and select "prefer 5GHz band"

This will force your wireless adapter to stay on the 5GHz band of your router.

If all your devices intend to use the 5GHz band, disable the 2.4GHz band on the router (although not recommended as many other devices such as IoT uses the wider, slower band)

The BUG:

I appears that windows will constantly hunt for the stronger signal even if it is the slower signal.   For example, if you were moving around your house with your laptop, you may have started on the 5GHz band, but it picks up the 2.4GHz as stronger, and goes on there.  Your network speed instantly drops.  (this will even happen if you are stationary).  

HOWEVER, even if you go back to an area with strong 5GHz coverage, windows does not return to the 5GHz speeds.  For whatever reason, the speed stays limited to the slower output.  That's why if you reboot or turn off and on the adapter, it resets it and you get max throughput again.

Microsoft should really fix this bug.

    I was excited by reading your post, but then realized I do not have Marvell AVASTAR Controller on my Lenovo Yoga 920, and the one installed (Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A Wireless Network Adapter) does not have a Band tag when navigating Properties. I do normally use 5 GHz, but this  Controller does not show this option, unffortunatelly. Tks

    I also had a wifi connection problem on a Windows 10 laptop (ASUS Vivobook Pro 17 N705UD-GC188T with a Realtek 8822 BE wifi card) - wifi connection was practically cut off for 2,5 seconds every few seconds which made it almost unusable. However, by some study and good luck I noticed that this problem started always after a while when I allowed sharing my location on some web page on Firefox. Closing the tab where I shared my location did not fix the issue, but closing Firefox did. I disabled location sharing on Firefox and this issue has not happened since. However, I can easily still reproduce the problem by re-enabling the location sharing on Firefox (81.0.1) and by visiting some web page where the location is shared.

    Connection problems did not occur when I used ethernet connection, only on wifi.

    I am not able to produce this issue by sharing location on Edge or Chrome, nor on some other Windows app which uses location services.

    I tried Firefox also on safe mode but it did not make any difference, wifi got broken after I shared my location on some tab.

    I have no idea why location sharing on Firefox can break the wifi connection though.

    I have a Surface Pro 4 and noticed the same issue with internet speeds getting unusably slow after short periods of use.  The only fix was to disable the card and reboot or rollback/update the driver after each use. I found this fix on another board and it has resolved my issues:

    1. Type the words device manager on the Start Screen/search and then open device manager.
    2. Expand Network adapters
    3. Right Click or tap and hold the Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller and select Properties
    4. With the Band property selected, change the value to 5 GHz Only (it is normally set to Auto).
    5. Select OK and reboot.

    Obviously, this only works when you have access to a 5 GHz option so you will need to switch it back if you go somewhere that only has 2.4 GHz.

    I hope this helps.  I have been dealing with this for over a year and so far this has completely resolved it for me.

    Well, I'm sorry for you, as I know how annoying this is. It's exactlly what I've been experiencing, and so far haven't found any solution, either within this thread or anywhere on the Internet. Time for someone with good relations at MS to claim for a much needed fix ;)
