Gary, I answer this in order of what you've said.
1. Yes, it forces me to let the system's APPs all updateas that's a step in the process which is a screen on the phone that it doesn't even let you skip.
2. The phone IS detected by File Explorer on the PC. On the left column, it will show Windows Phone with a sub-folder called Phone when it pops after the red arrow installing screen finishes on the phone.
What's weird is that after it shuts OFF and can't be turned ON, of course the PC can't see it when I attach it and it isn't shown. That's probably normal since it is OFF but if the phone were healthy, I bet plugging the USB cable always turns it on and it
would be displayed in File Explorer on the PC.
3. I've never gone to "Settings > Update & Security > Phone Updates to see what is going on with Updates" but I'll do it right nowas I'm in the process of doing another WDRT. Should I be concerned that it always goes back to that DEVICE SELECTION page of WDRT at this point after it has told me that it was successful in installing the software?
4. The last time I did the WDRT, I went ahead and told it to use OneDrivesince the few Photos I take or Save can easily fit within the free OneDrive limit, so even if I don't use OneDrive, who cares. But, it still bombed out after it fell asleep and couldn't be restarted.
5. Update & Security > Device Encryption is OFF.
6. You said "I would do nothing with any type if reset until the APPs are all installed and updated and the phone has finished all updates." So all I can get out of that is to look at that Updates thingyou told me to do in #3 and leave the phone alone. But I tried that last night and went to sleep with it still on and plugged into my PC and when I woke up, the phone was showing the Time on a weird Window looking screen that I've never seen before
and it couldn't be woken up. It was parked 3 feet from my home's Wi-Fi router and that phone is connected to that as part of the WELCOME process that I'd already done. So, shouldn't it have already been getting its Updates all night long or is that something
that needs me to do something to make happen?
7. What is the current OS version and firmware version? I don't know. I'll try to find it in Settings > Extras > Advanced Info as soon as it finishes installing the system APPS. It says
Firmware Update Notifier 1.2.16.7
Application Version 1.0.10.0
BSP Release 1078.0053
Build Creation Date 7/12/2016
MADE IN VIETNAM
Model RE-1105
It popped out of Advanced Info and now it won't even let me go back in. The words act like they know I tap them but it does nothing. Oh good, now after trying it 5 times and writing this, the 6th try took me in to see it again.
Here's something really weird that's somehow related to the Photos APP which has been giving me problems all along. I snapped some PrintScreens of that OS info and it doesn't show up on my PC in File Explorer. There's 6 Folders in Phone and they're all empty
and yet Photos do seem to be on my Phone but those must be on OneDrive since I sure haven't saved any onto my Phone from my PC thru the cable. That can't be, can it, since I think I was seeing Photos on my Phone when I'd tap Photos even when I'd say NO to
using OneDrive. Is it that the deal these Phones have is that OneDrive can be set to be displayed on them even if the Phone is set to not upload new Photos to OneDrive? I bet that's it and that's why those Folders are empty when I look at them on the PC's
File Explorer thru the cable to the Phone.
*** ADDED WITH EDIT ***
I'm at Updates & Security > Phone Update and it's doing something for a long time saying Please Wait . . . . I'm so bummed right now, I'd intentionally kept touching the screen to keep if awake as it was doing that Update and it
even went to screensaver a few times but would recover with the Power button but I was typing on this and I let it go black and now it can't be woke up. It's really not asleep, it's OFF. It does that same MICROSOFT then the blue Windows icon flashes briefly
and then DEAD.
I see that Szilard also gave me some link to read and try the "page 136 1 key restart method & the 2 key restart method" or even a "classic factory reset from Settings with buttons" since I guess
I've already given up on my backups & should just give it a fresh start.
Although if you think about it, I'd say pretty much nothing yet has improved over when I was trying to restore the backups.
