Photos app freezes upon import / photo importing problems

Hello, I was trying to import photos from my iPhone via charging cable and upon import the photo app freezes. I reset my phone and tried again and it worked for the first import but another problem is that I can only upload 3-4 videos at a time before the photos app says something went wrong and I have to start the whole process all over again. Because of this, when I go to import again it just freezes once it hits my total photo and video count. This problem has been persistent ever since I started uploading photos and videos this past year or two and it really hinders my progress. Thanks for any help.

    Ok so I gave up and looked for a third party software and found one that worked first time.

    Since so many have same issue I had to post a reply.

    Look online for - EaseUS Mobimover

    Free version available and it does exactly what a decent piece of software should... 

    Loaded program it indexed my Ipad and I said copy photos to hard disk and bam it's doing it right now no fuss!

    Thank you all whom said to change the settings on the iPhone to keep original, changed it and it worked like a charm bracelet!

    The problem with Mobimover is that it will download all your photos/videos each time unless you manually select what to download. They apparently have no intention of changing that ("Thank you for your message on EaseUS MobiMover.

    Our product will create a new sub-folder when transferring files. Sorry for the inconvenience. You could use Windows Copy and paste function to copy them to a folder."), so for me, although it works as advertised, it is a no go for the long term. One interesting thing though, it did identify on my phone about 20 files which it could not download, even though they look OK on the phone - I intend to delete them from the phone and try the Windows transfer again.

    I will add (while being late to the party, it seems) that I'm having the same problem right now, but not from a phone.  Just a standard SD card straight out of a Canon DSLR camera.  It's never happened before, but it's happening now and all my vacation photos, videos, and to-be animated content is being held hostage.

    I've done a lot of messing around with this problem. I'm a Windows programmer, so to see this issue persist for such a long time makes my blood boil - Microsoft will say it is a problem with the Apple driver that connects with the iPhone, and Apple will say it is a problem with the Windows software. I say it is both.
