I think I figured it out! I have always used Windows explorer to import my iPhone pics into my pictures folder manually. When trying to copy the pics I noticed there was a jpeg and a mov file with the same file name and realized the because of live photos saving a small video for each jpeg pic it takes, when attempting to backup your pics and videos it errors out and creates a conflict that crashes the connection between the phone and the computer. So my workaround is to change the view of the window to "details" and then sort all of the files by file type. I can then grab and drag all of the jpegs to my computer without any crash. The down side is however, the only way to tell which are my actual videos that I have taken vs the live video 1 or 2 sec clip is the file size. I really hope that Apple figures out a way to fix this so we can back up our pics and videos without any issues.
Hope that helps!
