Photos app freezes upon import / photo importing problems

For good measure, I am getting the exact same thing when trying to import photos from my Blackberry KeyTwo.  Same hang at the same point (it's just at '1009 items found so far').  Last time I did an upload to my desktop (last week) it was absolutely fine.  Probabaly need to check that now too.

I was also trying to move the Photos app so that the photos all sat in my OneDrive area, rather than on the hard drive.  When I clicked 'Move' from the Settings/Apps area no go, nada.  Didn't do anything, just ignored me.  I'm going to try a repair, however, bit time consuming...  These things should just work, shouldn't they?

I too have the same problem.  It started yesterday when I tried to import photos from my iPhone.  It kept freezing, and I was getting frustrated, so I opened iTunes and it told me to update my iOS, so I did that.  Then my iPhone didn't update properly and kept giving me error (14) so I called apple support and after an hour on the phone with them, no luck (this included making sure that all my windows software updates were complete, as well as iTunes/apple updates). I went to the apple store today where they tried to update my phone with no luck as well, and finally had to do a restore on my phone. I was devastated when I thought I lost nearly 5,000 photos/videos!  When I got home, I restored from back up and it turns out my phone must have backed up just before it tried to do the update (thank god!).  So back to trying to import my photos!  I attempted again today, and I got past the "XXXX photos detected" screen and was able to select a bunch (just under 100) to import (as I know trying to import too many can cause issues).  It imported over 50 photos, but said there was an error or something and didn't finish, and now of course, it keeps going back to freezing when detecting the number of photos on my phone.  It is very frustrating, and a fix soon would be greatly appreciated!

I've done a lot of messing around with this problem. I'm a Windows programmer, so to see this issue persist for such a long time makes my blood boil - Microsoft will say it is a problem with the Apple driver that connects with the iPhone, and Apple will say it is a problem with the Windows software. I say it is both.

The thing is, it appears that the driver attempts to convert the images and videos on the iPhone to a form acceptable to the PC - like converting .heic photos to .jpg, or converting movies. I believe this is where the problem begins - a think particular images or movies are failing the conversion, and the driver either faults and stops in its tracks without detecting the problem gracefully, or Windows Photos does not handle the fault in a graceful manner and just blocks or crashes

I've found that...

• set the phone to download the images in original format. Windows 10 can now handle .heic images.
• movies that have been slo-moed or timelapsed may cause problems.
• images that originate from sources other than the camera can cause problems.

Going through and deleting those on the phone may work.

In the end, with 9,000+ photos and movies on my phone, I gave up. I tried iCloud photos - unbelievably slow - would have taken months to upload. In the end I just paid for Google Photos space - took a few days to upload but it worked and now I have a backup.

I reckon it is about time for a class action against Apple and Microsoft for blatantly ignoring this issue for so long, treating people with contempt by not acknowledging the value of our personal photos and movies, and providing pathetic solutions to the problem over and over again, like - have you updated iTunes and Windows - of course we have - we are not bloody stupid!

Come on Microsoft - pull your bloody fingers out of your holes and get together with the Apple engineers and solve this problem ASAP!

I have this exact issue as well. It's pretty terrible as I need to upload videos from my phone to my PC I took of myself teaching to submit to the state and am on a deadline. Any help would be appreciated. The Photos app of course freezes before it recognizes all the photos/videos, just like with everyone else here.

Same thing happens with a Canon 7D Camera.
